Earlier today I witnessed a young man 👨 filling a pot hole 🕳 on Stone Mountain Road. Low and behold, it was Jason Stockner improving our road while instructing Kris Richardson on technique.
Stories have been pouring in over the past few days about Stockner in his prime and the positive influence he had on a number of folks in our area.
Here in a bit, Jason will switch from his VDOT work clothes into his Head Coach outfit. I am not sure if he has to do this in a phone booth or not (Superman reference) but after that he will become Jason Stockner – assistant Varsity Coach.

Yesterday was a incredibly long day and I made a choice to make it even longer by taking in some Girls 👧 Basketball 🏀 at JRHS.
Pappy Meade and I go back roughly 20 years but because of our schedules we don’t get to spend much time together. Last night 🌙 we created a window that didn’t really exist and we used it to watch our Girls play at James River.
When asked by my friend what we would be taking in at JRHS, here is how I responded – both of our rosters are lite in regards to numbers and we don’t have a great deal of size. But we are well coached and we play hard from start to finish. The young ladies are actual Student Athletes and maybe a couple of them might look at Basketball as their main sport. Then I wrapped it up with describing how much respect I have for their parents.
When time allowed it I introduced Pappy to some folks. First, it was Kevin Burress as the Dad 👨 of #3. A few minutes later it was Velvet Leonard, Mom 👩 of #22. After a while we visited with the Parents of #10.
Last night was a work day for the Parents and a School day for the players and they were all in a Gym a long way from home 🏡, playing a game that would go unnoticed for the most part.
Realizing that I had never had the privilege of meeting the Mother of Miss Young, I asked for assistance in saying hello 👋. Turns out that Shannon Young teaches at the Elementary School 🏫 and works with Special Needs. Wow 👏, that combination is off the charts to me.
We watched our Ladies play hard, listen to their Coach and get spacing for good looks at the basket 🧺. There sat Pappy cheering away from our Lady 👩 Cavaliers, with just my words to go off.
The only thing that didn’t go our way was the shot attempts wouldn’t fall. It’s just that simple but in a World 🌎 where a great deal of emphasis is put on winning, the takeaway will be a 39-21 loss.
So, if one were to ask why I would go to such lengths to write ✍ about the game last night 🌙 please know its because there should be a statue somewhere of Brandi Cochran Mitchell, Kevin Burress woke up at 4am to go to work at Volvo, Shelia Harris taught, drove, watched, rode, napped and is now teaching again.
I could continue down the list and now I can fully appreciate that there’s another teacher in the mix. Solid people raising solid Children who are trying hard to represent our Community….
Kevin Worrell is now tasked with trying hard to make me Purdy but he says he’s just a Barber, not a magician….
Buchanan, Virginia – James River jumped out to an early 28-4 lead on its way to a 39-21 Three Rivers District victory over Carroll County Thursday night.
While the team fell short in its effort to erase the large deficit, they did battle back the remainder of the game. The Lady 👩 Cavaliers outscored the Knights 16-11 over the span of the second half, including holding their host to a single made basket 🧺 in the fourth quarter.
The effort that Coach Howard Mayo received on the defensive end was solid throughout. The eight player rotation managed to hold JRHS to under 40 points but could not find a rhythm on the offensive end of the court.
” We are still working at being consistent, shooting the ball, and attacking the zone hopefully we will get better,” said Mayo. ” I thought we did a good job at free throw line.”
The Lady Cavaliers were perfect from the foul line as both Raylee Goins (4 points) and CC Mitchell made both of their free throw attempts on the evening. Callie Harris ( 3 points) connected from behind the arc for the lone made 3-pointer and the team combined for seven two point baskets.
Laynie-Jo Leonard and Mitchell led the way with six points each and Kenzie McMillian accounted for the remaining two points.
The team will look to build on its 1-1 week on the road in the coming week as they play three contests, all away from The Hill. Monday night at Floyd County, Wednesday night at Patrick County and closing the week on Friday night at Martinsville. Next week will be the Lady Cavaliers second straight three game week with five of the six taking place on the road.
In the Junior Varsity game the Lady Cavaliers ran out of time in their contest, falling 28-23. CCHS scored the final five points to pull within five points but the rally ended there.
Madison Adkins led the way with eight points while Aaliyah Hampton dropped seven points and Brea Campbell netted five points.
