60 minutes from the opening Tip down in Buchanan as we are set to play the back half of our Home and Home with the Knights of James River.
Back on January 3rd we hosted JRHS and the Knights JV held us at bay, 27-21. Here we are 27 days later so it should provide a solid measuring stick for the progress our Lady Cavaliers.
Carroll County had to st out the first game of the week when Glenvar hosted the Varsity team so I’m sure our team will be ready to play.
I’m still waiting on my next ride here in Waynesboro on a day where I was in need of three shuttles to get back from Luray to Laurel Fork. 63 miles left to the Gym so it will be the Network in the car 🚗 until arrival.
After the ball games, Marion Harris will play the role of Hero as he takes me back to our Village.
Back to the JV game, Carroll County has a record of 2-7 and JR 6-13 per MaxPreps. But JV records are not always recorded correctly. James River, for example, having already played 19 games seems like a high number. But we do know the initial contest was a close one so we will hope for a good game !

One has to know that if Greg and Allen appear to be the same height that there’s a curb involved….
Getting to speak with Tee for a brief moment last Saturday vacated the top spot on my list and then I turned my attention to the next person that I have heard stories about but had never met.
The amount of times someone has told me a story about Greg is too high to count so it was an absolute pleasure officially meeting him for the first time. Once we started talking it became obvious that our paths had crossed a couple of times before, I just wasn’t aware of who he was at the time.
Five things I learned in a short period of time begins with the ring Greg was wearing. It turns out that he is a pretty big Magnum P.I and yesterday was Tom Sellecks 80th Birthday 🎂, hence wearing of the Magnum ring.
#2 – I have seen Greg wearing Wrestling gear and hanging around Wrestling Coach West Long so I asked him what was his connection to the program ? Note 📝, I was wearing my Wrestling shirt 👕 as I try to rep West whenever possible. It turns out that West married one of Greg’s daughters.
#3 – Allen tells me that Greg was a bit of a Wrestler himself back in the day. That is a story that I look forward to hearing more about later.
#4 – Greg is both a Deputy and a teacher at the High School 🏫. That is a unique daily double for sure so it begs to ask how many times has someone split their time in that manner ?
#5 – Greg went to school around the same time as Kris Richardson and had stories about that part of our History. More that I look forward to hearing more about.
Our mindset is the same in that we both think it’s more fun to be positive than negative. Sounds simple enough but important just the same.
Not sure who takes the Top Spot now but I’m sure the answer will present itself sooner than later.

Carroll hosted a Three Rivers Scholastic Bowl meet this afternoon with Patrick County and Glenvar.
Carroll A (Connor Beasley, Jacob Roberts, Bradley Dalton, Joey Rash-Rowland, Sadie Spence) won both rounds.
Carroll 230 ‐ Patrick 145 Carroll 185 – Glenvar 160
Carroll B (Terry Woods, Zoe Martin, William Dalton, Cameron Cooke) fell in two rounds to Patrick B
Carroll 90 – Patrick 130 Carroll 75 – Patrick 130
A noteworthy shoutout to Will Dalton for scoring 145 of the 165 points on the night for the B team. And apologies to Mark Twain from the A team. 🤣

Carroll County had their undefeated start end in game number 16 but know that the Cavaliers did not fade quietly into the night before falling 63-60 to visiting Glenvar Wednesday night.
CCHS played their normal game, sharing the ball on offense and playing tough defense end to end but there was one major difference. Brody Dawyot is a 6’4 junior who dabbles as the schools football team Quarterback.
The Cavaliers finished up with all five starters scoring at least eight points and were led by Bryce Smoot with 16 points. Meanwhile Dawyot finished up with 33 of the 63 Glenvar needed to secure the victory.
CCHS headed into the fourth quarter trailing 49-43 and would go on to win the frame 17-14. The defense stepped up throughout the final 8:00, including holding the other four starters to just four points. The only thing that the Cavaliers did not have an answer for was Dawyot.
The big man scored a basket to push the lead to 53-45 but Bryce Smoot and Ethan Richardson (15 points) cut ✂️ it back to just two points with back to back 3-pointers. Dawyot answered with five quick points but Isaiah Easter ( 9 points) and Cody Reece (12 points) to pull the Cavs within three points.
99 seconds were on the clock ⏰ when Bryce Smoot launched a 3-pointer from the top of the key that bounced in and out. Easter would score on a reverse lay-up at 1:13 to trim it to one and after a Glenvar miss, Richardson was next to get a great look at a 3-,pointer that just refused to fall.
Carroll County kept charging and Reece cut the lead to 62-60 with a put back basket but there was two seconds left in the contest. Dawyot added a free throw for the final margin.
“Tough one losing at home, but we know coming in we were going to face a really good basketball team in Glenvar,” said Barnes. ” We knew Doywat would be tough in the paint and hard to handle, I really think we played him as well as you can and Isiah and Cody and the guards dug deep to limit him but he is a handful physically.We lost by 3, left 5 free-throws on the line and just struggled shooting and finishing at the rim, we gave up some second shot opportunities on them and you just can’t against them. “
Barnes made a defensive adjustment after the first quarter in regards to Dawyot. Fifteen of the 33 points came in the opening quarter when Carroll County was playing man to man. The team switched up the game plan and sent help anytime the ball went inside. The plan worked as Dawyot was held to just four points in each of the middle quarters.
The defense was still working down the stretch as the damage was being done on the offensive glass.
” I told the guys after the game we forced some shots and made bad decisions at times and got stagnate on execution on offense, proud of the effort coming back being down 9 to tie,” Barnes added. ” The free-throws and 27% 3point shooting hurt us, a couple of them go its different outcome. We dust ourselves player’s and Coaches and shift focus too James River on Friday and get the Cavalier 🚆 train moving down the track again !
While the Varsity team fell because of facing one player, the Junior Varsity team fell because of just one shot. Glenvar sank 18 3-pointers in their 84-53 victory.
Carroll County was led by Colton Gravley with 17 points and Blake Reed joined him in double figures with 12. Hayden Jackson added nine and Dane Leonard seven points but its hard to score enough 2 pointers to counter punch a barrage of shots from behind the arc.
Both teams will complete their busy week with a third game this week when James River visits The Hill Friday night.
