Hillsville – Head Coach Howard Mayo has to appreciate the fact that his Lady Cavaliers were able to return to playing basketball for just the second time in 25 days. The veteran Coach found reasons to smile Tuesday night after CCHS fell 57-28 to Floyd County.
” I love our ability to continue to compete, no matter the score of the game,” said Mayo. ” The way we attacked the basket from start to finish shows our effort.”
Β Mayo was down to seven players dressed as Laynie-Jo Leonard joined Faith Clontz on the not available to play list. While Clontz is out for the season, Leonard is hopeful to return after a bout with the flu.
Seven players dressed, all seven saw action and each etched their name in the scoring column. Raylee Goins led the offense with eight points with five of them coming down the stretch. CCHS played the fourth quarter to a 9-7 score, showing the effort that Mayo referred to was evident until the final whistle.

Β The value of preparation for the next opponent on the schedule varies from team to team. In the case of the ever so young Lady π© Cavs, every moment is a teaching moment and Mayo was quick to point out that the scheduling issues due to weather conditions further complicated things for his staff as they look to prepare for the next opponent.
” The goal each game is to prepare for the next opponent,” Mayo added. ” We couldn’t implement what we were working on for the next game when the next opponent kept changing day to day.”
Β Having three games pushed back during the delay will now create a new problem for the limited roster. After playing twice in 25 days, the team will now race to get games made up over the coming weeks.
Β Kenzie McMillan added five points while both Kenzie Young and Madison Coleman netted four each. CC Mitchell and Callie Harris finished with three points apiece with Natalie Burress adding the final point.
Β Floyd County also captured the Junior Varsity game Tuesday night, 45-15. Six different players scored with Madison Adkins, Aaliyah Hampton and Madison Fain each netting three points.
The teams are set to return to action π¬ on Thursday night π as they start the uphill climb of getting makeup contests scheduled.
