Floyd – Head Coach Anthony Barnes and his Carroll County Cavaliers must be butter 🧈because they are on a Roll. The team now stands at a perfect 10-0 after four players reached double figures in their 65-50 victory over Cave Spring during the annual Chance Harmon Hoops festival.

Carroll County (10-0) is now 4-0 on neutral courts with their latest victory over the Roanoke school. They have found success at home, on the road and while playing in these special events.

It appeared that CCHS was going to play in its third straight nailbighter after going to the break leading 31-28. All of that changed in the third quarter when Ethan Richardson (19 points) and Bryce Smoot (16 points) took control of the game on the offensive end.

Richardson connected on a pair of 3-pointers inside of a small window during his 10 point quarter. Bryce Smoot dropped half of his points in the same spurt, allowing the Cavaliers to push their lead out to 55-42. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the game to seal the deal for win number 10.

Once again, Barnes was very appreciative of the opportunity to play in the special events, both at Fort Chiswell and now Floyd County.

” Very special to get invited to play in this Invitational for such a special cause, its one thing to win it,” Barnes said. ” It its another thing to beat a region team coached by a multiple state championship coach.”

While each victory counts as one, this one did feel a bit different because of the opponent. Once again the unselfish play on the offensive end proved to be the difference for the Cavaliers. Isaiah Easter added 12 points and Big Man Cody Reece collected yet another double-double, much to the delight of his head Coach.

”Β  I am very proud of how hard we played and excuted on offense and controlled the boards , we new they were bigger and athletic and we had to limit their second shots,” added Barnes. “Cody Reece was huge in the middle,Β  10 pts and 12 rebounds another double double.Β  Trace came in and really played physical and gave us some huge minutes. Brayden Smoot defensively held what we considered their best player to just seven points.”

The Cavaliers will return home on Monday night to face another challenge as cross county rival Galax makes the short drive to The Hill. The Maroon Tide have struggled out of the gate this season and facing the Cavaliers will be a quick turnaround type of opportunity.

” We put four guys in double figures,  Richardson with 19, 3 3’s , Bryce 16 3
3’s and Easter with 12 hard earned points,  I told them at half thats the best we looked and I needed 16 more minutes and they gave us just that.  10-0 , looking really good going into District play, HOW ABOUT THEM CAVS.”

No hiding the jubilant feeling surrounding the team right now. One day after the Galax game the Cavaliers welcome Alleghany to town and the initial setback is bound to happen but until then, How ’bout them Cavs, indeed !

Welcome πŸ™ to Saturday morning πŸŒ„, also known as Day #38/42. Head Coach Howard Mayo shares his thoughts on his teams efforts on Friday night with our Marion Harris. βž• JV coverage!!

From Coach Mayo :

Β Β Β Β  “Good evening . I thought our first quarter was one of our best this year. But our in ability to keep them off the boards and some timely 3 point shoots in the 2nd quarter was the difference in the game.”

Β  We truly appreciate πŸ™ Coach Mayo for his thoughts on the efforts of his ever so young Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers !

Raylee Goins scored a basket 🧺 that gave Carroll County a 14-12 lead early on. To say that our Ladies are in the early stages of a overhaul of the program would be selling it short which means the desire to show them support is even greater than ever.

Β  James River would eventually storm back for a 46 – 24 victory but as Coach said, the Cavs started out strong πŸ’ͺ.

The Junior Varsity team opened the evening up and played one of its better games of the season.

Here’s the thoughts from one of the two Coaches leading the team…

Β  ” We had a starting 5 tonight that has never seen that moment but they answered every time. We have fought illness all year but this group of girls has showed up and met every obstacle with hard work. Tonight we put up a lot of good shots they just wouldn’t fall.

We had girls playing in positions for the very first time and executed those positions well. We had zero complaints with our girls defensively tonight we just needed to answer on the boards with rebounds. I think with a full healthy roster we will start seeing much deserved wins with this group.
Maddison Fain became eligible to play on Jan 1st and brought fire to the team that we have been missing. She has the drive and she wants to win. Every girl able to play tonight gave us meaningful minutes and all and all we played the best we have as a team.

They have made so much progress from game one and they will only keep getting better from here.”

Coach Hailie
