Dane Leonard and Blake Reed scored 10 points each to lead Carroll County to a wire to wire 48-30 victory over the Chilhowie Warriors.
Final Score !
” We played well against Chilhowie. Our defense and rebounding fueled our offense. We lead by 10 after the first quarter and up 16 at halftime. We boxed out better and limited our turnovers. We need to continue to improve in those areas to sustain this success.”
Β Carroll County now sits at 2-3 heading into a home contest on Friday versus Fort Chiswell.
The JV team is also set to compete in the upcoming Fort Chiswell Tournament !
Thank you to Kris Richardson for the bracket, to Bill Gallimore for the updates and Jason Stockner for his insights !
Chilhowie – Bryce Smoot led the charge in the first half and Ethan Richardson took the scoring baton after intermission to lead Carroll County (5-0) to a thrilling 63-59 road victory Tuesday night.
The homestanding Warriors (2-2) raced out to a quick 8-0 lead and held the Cavaliers at bay until Isaiah Easter made two free throws to take their first lead at 22-21 early in the second quarter.
Β Bryce Smoot scoredΒ 19 of his game high 21 points in the opening half. The Senior connected twice on 3-point shots that would have J. J. Redick and Steph Curry blush. Despite the offensive explosion from Bryce Smoot the Cavs lead was only 36-31 at the break.
Β The opening three minutes of the second half pushed the Cavaliers to the absolute brink. Smoot and Richardson both picked up their third fouls and Will Goodwin broke free for a Dunk during a 12-2 run. The five point lead had quickly turned into a five point deficit on the road in a Gymnasium called “The Hot Box”.
” Welcome to Chilhowie gym, been around since the 40’s they call it the hot box , old balcony and all, we felt like this would be tough with environment and with their center which is 6-7,” Head Coach Anthony Barnes said. ” We started out slow again and finally started getting to rim and into transition,Β Bryce carried us the first half keeping us in it . Then the foul trouble got him, then Cody really had a great game playing physically and smart all in one , he gave us some great put backs around the rim, and then Ethan caught fire finishing the game with 17, 4 3’s. “
Β Β The lead for the Cavaliers was just 49-47 at the start of the fourth quarter. On the opening possession Bryce Smoot was whistled for a charge, leaving Barnes no choice but to sit him down for a few minutes.
Β Richardson took center stage during the game changing 9-3 run. The lanky Senior made two from in the lane, a 3-pointer and a steal and assist to Easter (9 points) on the remaining basket.
Β Cody Reece, Trace Reavis and Easter all spent the entire evening staring up at the Warriors they were guarding. Reece( 6 points) and Bryce Smoot managed to remain in the game by avoiding their fifth foul. CHS continued to make mini runs at the Cavaliers.
Β The contest was still very much in doubt until Brayden Smoot (9 points) pushed the lead out to six and Richardson made a free throw to push the lead out to 63-59. Even on the final play Goodwin tried to create a foul on a desperation 3-pointer.
Β When that final shot missed its mark, Barnes and his team could finally breathe a little bit easier.
” Again we got great minutes from Puckett,Β Reavis and Burnett alot of unforseen work on defensive side that never hits the stat line,” Barnes added. “I told the guys this is preparing us for down the road in District play, we still got everyone we face trying to knock us out, but these guys are tough gritty and don’t give in or ever up attitude. I tell them all the time its last ride for them leave everything you have on the floor no regrets in the game you play ! On into Friday with Fort coming to us and its finally at home after being on the road last 4 games. GO CAVS !
