Junior Varsity Volleyball 🏐 season closes out with a Priceless moment courtside

Carroll County High School 🏫 Junior Varsity Volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-13, 25-20) Thursday night but the Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers fought until the very end and the match included a Kodak moment between Clara DeHaven and Paisley Snider. Sadly, I was so moved by the gesture that I couldn’t take the photo.

DeHaven arrived at Radford feeling under the weather which meant that Head Coach Jason Petty would have to have one of his other players dawn the white jersey that belongs to the Libero.

The Libero jersey and matching responsibilities are different from the play of the other five spots on the court and DeHaven held down the spot throughout the season.

There was Snider wearing a white #19 jersey trying to soak it all in. Then in a moment that I won’t forget anytime soon, DeHaven is standing beside her offering words of encouragement to her teammate and the moment ended with the two players sharing a brief hug. Priceless memory to close out the season and if anyone else captured that, Please send it to me.

In the opening set, Aaliyah Hampton finished off a set from Leigha Harrad for a Kill that pulled CCHS to within 11-8 but that was as close as the Lady Cavaliers would get in the 25-13 set back.

In the second set Carroll County was able to keep it closer and led 16-14 Midway through before the Bobcats exploded with a 9-0 run πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ to make it 23-16.

CCHS tried to answer back and did pull to within 24-20 after a service Ace from Addilynn Stanley. The Bobcats closed out the set, match and season for the Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers with the final point.

This concludes the coverage for the Junior Varsity Volleyball 🏐 team so the final piece of business is to say Thank You to Coach Petty, Assistant Coach Nikki Heflin and Volunteer πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Coach Skyler Petty.

Thank you to the 17 young ladies that became 15 after both Heidi Painter and Ellie Heflin were called up to Varsity.

Kudos to the Parents for showing up each night and cheering πŸ‘ on the efforts of their Lady Cavalier !

Going to start the Volleyball 🏐 Live Blog a bit early tonight as we end the regular season…

The photo πŸ“· above is for the final player profile that we will run πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ tomorrow ! Ruth Hylton opened her home 🏑 up to Leny Richter and we will tell that story tomorrow !!!

5:30 – Junior Varsity will play their final match of the season and the final one of the decade long Coaching career of Head Coach Jason Petty.

Their season will end tonight, win or lose and we would like to Thank Coach Petty and Coach Nikki Heflin for their efforts this season ! The season was going to be a challenging one anyway but when you add the loss of two young ladies due to Varsity call-ups, it increased the challenge. Kudos to the team for continuing to try to learn on the fly.

Approximately 30 minutes later the Varsity Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers (12-8, 7-4) will have their rematch with the Bobcats. Earlier this season, CCHS led 2-0 at home before Radford stormed back for the 3-2 victory.

There’s a great deal on the line tonight in regards to the District Tourney Championship that begins on Monday night.

To clarify this, we bring in the expertise of our Athletic Director Kevin DeHaven to explain…

Tiebreaker Procedure

If there is a tie between schools in the district record, the tie will be broken as follows:
1.  Head to head record of the teams that are tied.
2.  Common opponents outside of district play with equal number of games played versus that       opponent.

  1. Tiebreaker numbers in draw

Standings in the District before tonight :

Alleghany 10-1 (hosting Floyd)

James River 8-3 (@ Glenvar)

Radford 8 – 3 (hosting CCHS)

Carroll County 7-4 (@ Radford)

_______________________________

We know that Alleghany will play host to the #4 seed on Monday night. The Cougars lost their opening match to us and then won 10 straight.

After that it gets very interesting , if Carroll County loses to Radford we will finish fourth and pack our Bags πŸŽ’ for Alleghany on Monday.

If we win tonight we would pull into a tie πŸ‘” for 3rd place with Radford. We would then go to the tiebreaker system outlined by Mr. DeHaven.

There is no guarantee that James River will beat Radford but the Knights are playing lights out right now. JRHS swept both Carroll County and Radford in the past 10 days.

If both Radford and James River win tonight they will πŸ‘” for 2nd and have their own tiebreaker to see which school 🏫 would host the other.

Just for fun, if Glenvar upsets James River and we upset Radford, we would have a three way πŸ‘” for second place. While that would be fun, we would lose that tiebreaker because we would finish 1-3 versus the other two while James River would be 3-1 and Radford 2-2.

So, to wrap up, we cannot host on Monday night or Wednesday night if we reach the finals.

If we lose tonight we head to the Highlands. If we win tonight, chances are we are heading to James River High School.

With all that said, neither Coach Edwards nor I was sure that we would have this to worry about this season. Finishing in the Top Four with less than 10 combined years of Varsity experience = Amazing πŸ‘…

After tonight’s puzzle we can take a look at the Regional tournament and that situation which begins next Saturday with the play-in games.

More to follow once we are inside !

Our Twelfth Volleyball 🏐 Player Profile shines a Light on Miss Corrie Delp !

Corrie Marie Delp

Galax is her hometown (technically she’s a Gladeville girl from Carroll Co.

Height 5’7″.

Parents : Jon & Vanetta Delp

Class – Junior

From Corrie :

I am so glad I chose to play volleyball my freshman year of high school, I’ve grown to love and be very passionate about it. I have great coaches who have brought me a long way from where i began freshman year.

I love spending time with my teammates, getting to grow better with them, and growing a great friendship.

________________________________

From Mom πŸ‘© and Dad πŸ‘¨ :
We are very proud of Corrie taking on this “new” sport of volleyball (for her) a couple of years ago.

She wanted to try it and we supported her even though she left some success at cross country prior to volleyball.

She caught on quickly and really likes it and has dedicated herself to it with travel volleyball in the off season when she could. She also has stuck with it this year even after an early season broken ankle.

Her desire to rehab and PT the ankle to get back is to her credit. We hope she will continue to love it and work hard to better herself at it. We love her drive. When she sets her mind to something, she does it.

From Head Coach Cindy Edwards :

Corrie Delp is so athletic. At the very beginning of the season she broke her ankle at practice.

She was a player we were counting on a lot, but things happened for a reason it allowed other young kids to get valuable playing time. Corrie just got released yesterday, so hopefully, we can get her a little bit of playing time here at the end of our season. Corrie also runs track and plays basketball, she is another 3 sport athlete.

Going to step in here and temporarily fill the Giant shoes πŸ‘ž of Assistant Coach Maleah Neely. First I would like to say a GIANT Thank you to Coach Neely for the amount of time and dedication πŸ‘ she has shown in writing ✍ something personal about each one of the Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers.

Now, in regards to Miss Corrie Delp and her efforts this season. With many of the triple threat Athletes at the High School level, its hard to peg which sport is their true passion. That’s simply not the case with Miss Delp, she is a Track and Field star, having qualified for the State meet in both her Freshman and Sophomore seasons.

Suffering a bizarre accident in pre-season practice that led to a broken ankle, it would have been ever so easy to just go home and rest up for Track πŸ‘£season. The fact that Delp stayed with the team in her walking boot and pushed herself as hard as she could shows a few things – first, it shows the level of commitment that Delp has to herself and second, it shows her Love πŸ’˜ and respect she has for her Coaches and her Volleyball 🏐 teammates.

Delp eventually made it to the next step which was to dress out for a Match and then finally played a few minutes in the home finally !

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you, Miss Corrie Delp of Gladeville !

Good Morning πŸ™ and Welcome to Day 4 of 14 ! Let’s call this one – The Road to Radford…

Just like a Preacher will try to lighten the mood by telling a joke at the start of a sermon, let’s begin the Day with a funny memory from my youth.

The photos above are from the most lopsided Football 🏈🏈🏈 game in the history of the sport. Georgia Tech edged out Cumberland 222-0. I don’t recall reading many books in School but one I did read was titled Great Sports Humor.

I remember reading about a football game where the final score was 200+ to zero and the losing team was from where my Mother πŸ‘© was born 19 years later.

In the book πŸ“–, the tell the story about a Cumberland player getting his Bell πŸ”” rung on a given play and then when he was able to gather himself enough to walk off the field, he went to the Georgia Tech sideline instead of his own.

The GT coach approached the young man πŸ‘¨ and asked about his well being. The Student Athlete replied that he was fine which led the Coach to inform him that he was on the wrong sideline to which he replied, “No Sir, if I go back over there they will try to put me back in the game.”

222-0, not sure exactly what happened that day but I can relate to coming up on the short end of the scoreboard. You have to dust yourself off and then ask, what could I have done better ? What can I take away from the experience that will help me in the next battle ?

Day 4 will be centered around two events, the Junior Varsity season ending Three Rivers District Volleyball 🏐 match at Radford and then the Varsity team will close out their regular season with a Match against the Bobcats.

Head Coach Cindy Edwards and her team will play at least two more times after tonight, possibly more if they find success in their post season tournaments.

Radford is one of the three teams that are set to enter the Three Rivers District Championship tournament on Monday along with the Lady πŸ‘© Cavaliers. CCHS (12-8, 7-4) led the Bobcats 2-0 when they played on The Hill but could not close out the night, falling 3-2.

Monday night will have #1 hosting #4 & #2 versus #3 with the winners πŸ† playing for the Crown πŸ‘‘ on Wednesday night πŸŒ™.

The next thing on the Agenda πŸ“‹ will be to share Player Profile #12, the one for Corrie Delp. The final one will be on Exchange Student Leny Richter, who will be heading back to Germany πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ before the end of the Calender year.

Late yesterday the Family πŸ‘ͺ suffered a loss as my Uncle Elvin Owens passed away over in Tennessee. He had lived an adventurous life and gets credit for teaching me how to both talk and listen at the same time. I feel that the life lesson he taught me back then is at or near the top of the list when it comes to my level of success in Life.

The Junior Varsity Football team was able to add an opponent back for tonight after originally showing their final two games as canceled. This will give the team an opportunity to bounce back after suffering their first setback of the season at Floyd County.

We would love to hear about how the game plays out so we can share with folks that are not on Facebook. The team has experienced a great season πŸ‘ to this point !

Day 4 of 14 is here, now get out there and have a Blessed Day !
