East River Soccer β½οΈ Complex – It’s Wednesday afternoon and something is about to take place for the final time. In about 20 minutes, Carroll County High School π« Alum KK Newman will take to her home Pitch for the very last time.
We have a few minutes before 1st touch so let’s use it to discuss just why this segment was oh so important to me.
Life is a struggle, pretty much across the board and one of the things that I feel our Youth can use more of is people that they can look up to as an inspiration. Even at the Age of 61, I am still searching for people to look up to. Doctor Oliver McBride is the most recent example of finding one of those types of people.
Kalee Bunn, Madison Stockner, KK Newman, Cordy Gardner, Natalie Harris and Ashlyn Newman are all current CCHS graduates π that are now chasing their next piece of paper.
These 6 young Ladies along with everyone else not listed are Carroll County success stories and should be viewed as just that. Are any of them going to challenge for a National Championship next month ? Not even a little but what the are doing is setting an example for the ones behind them.
Let’s take a look at the trio that played Volleyball π for Cindy Edwards. Stockner, Bunn and Gardner all experienced the disciplined manner in which Coach Edwards runs πββοΈ her program and the also experienced the fact that Coach Edwards simply wants what’s best for them.
They’re all in College now and still playing VB and excelling as NCAA Student Athletes. A young player coming through the School system now should know the storyline behind these young Ladies just incase they could gain confidence from seeing that others were they are now.
The team the Rams π are facing today is Columbia College (South Carolina). The two teams played early in the season and the Rams will have their hands full.
But today is not about Soccer, its about saluting someone who graduated from CCHS and then went on to play and earn her degree from a College or University. Don’t forget representing CCHS with Class every step of the way.
The Soccer β½οΈ Ball you can barely see left the playing field, hit off my Truck, rolled across the parking lot and found the only hole big enough for it to roll under ( Too weird).
KK Newman is going places in Life and the Trifecta of God, Family πͺ and Education are tremendous π Building Blocks !
Know those who read our site on a regular basis have a bit of an understanding of why this segment mattered to me. You are never too old to have Role Models !!!!
Half-time Score is 3-0 in favor of the Visitors (2:51 pm) 15:00 on the Clock β° for the break……
Earlier this week I spent some time at an event that also included KK and her efforts….
Took the time to do my Good Deed of the Day by walking πΆββοΈ over to the Home π‘ bench area to let the staff know where they could find their runaway Ball. They seemed very appreciative !!!
3:07 – Start of 2nd Half….
37:27 – (2), now 4-0…
36:26 – π ever so close the getting one back.
31:40 – Perfect play on a Corner Kick leads to the 5th goal.
22:12 – KK exits the game after being subbed out. Possible end…
Just as was the case last year for fellow alumni, Adrienne Harris, its time to hang up the competitive spikes but also like Harris, the very, very Bright future lies directly ahead!
Laiken Burnett : I have been playing volleyball as long as I can remember. I love volleyball. It is a relaxing and fun way to take my mind off life and focus on playing volleyball and enjoying time with my teammates. I love my teammates and coaches with everything in me and I am so thankful for all of them. I am so thankful for my family and how supportive they constantly are of me.

Assistant Coach Maleah Neely :
Setters have a special place in my heart because I was one. It’s an understanding of, “Hey I really know this position because I played it, and I know the weight that the position holds – let me help you carry it until you can do it on your own.”
From my first year with Taylor Jo Burnette (now Dalton) to Taylor Spangler (now Combs), then to Hannah Spangler, then Natalie Harris and Emily Dalton, and now Laiken, there is just an understanding. The setter language is one that many times is unspoken – usually using hand signals, or even just a certain look.
My goal always is for setters to become more independent with running the court – from setting the offense to being offensive. Laiken has started to do that. She runs the floor, but still needs guidance from time to time on what to do and who the hot hitter is. Many times she just needs the reassurance that who she wants to set is a good choice, or that dumping the ball is a good choice. She knows what to do, it’s just that reassurance sometimes is needed. Laiken has stepped up her defense and has led us in digs in 2 or 3 games this season.
She also, unsurprisingly, leads us in assists on the season and is running a super steady offense with our outsides pretty similar in kills. She is leading an undersized and oftentimes outmatched team to some pretty solid games. As a lefty, Laiken is set up to be more of an offensive threat in the front row, and she has worked to make herself an option that other teams have to respect. As good as she has been for us this year, Laiken’s love is across the road down on the Diamond.
She is an excellent softball player and many weekends you will find her covered in dirt, doing one of the things she loves most. All her time playing sports doesn’t take away from her academics though.
She is one of the most studious kids I have been around and takes it seriously. She does not let herself be defined by sports or academics, but instead finds her peace and strength in Jesus. One look at her social media and you can see how much she loves sports, but even before that you see how much she loves Jesus.
With Jesus at the forefront and her stellar work ethic, there is no mountain that she won’t be able to conquer.

Head Coach Cindy Edwards :
Laiken is a Jr. Setter with a lot of ability to control the game our offense runs through her hands and the decisions she makes setting the ball .
Laiken last year had great middles to set to who put the ball down this year she has to distribute it all around more including her self as a hitter when she’s on the front row.
Laiken also has been one of those 3 sport athletes who is very smart and knowledgeable because she see everything so well.
The regular season is winding down for the Boys π¦ and Girls π§ Varsity Cross Country teams. Today, Head Coach Shawn Montgomery takes his runners πββοΈ up to Blacksburg for their next race.
We look forward to sharing the results with you later today !
