Pictured here is Katelyn Nester standing π§ββοΈin front of her Home on Coon Ridge, north of Hillsville, Virginia.
For simplicity purposes we will call this House π #4, the Home that Katelyn helped build.
Dr Oliver McBride carries a fire inside of him that should be the envy of many. Dr McBride is currently in his mid 70’s and still wakes up every day and tries to make our Community a better place to live.
We spent two hours together and this time included meeting both Katelyn Nester and expecting Mom, Amber Newman.
Before we get into the amazing stories about these two young ladies and their families we should frame the story just a bit.
Here are a few key things that are involved in pairing a Family with a Fuller Center House.
There is a very detailed Application process for anyone interested in being selected to participate in the program. This makes perfect sense being that both parties are entering into a 30 year partnership together.
The goal, from the Fuller Center side of this heart warming program is to find people that are looking to purchase a home that can afford to make the mortgage payments but would not qualify for a conventional loan. The combined income has to fall into a certain range as well.
Once the Application process has been completed, the new Home Owners receive a 30 year loan at 0% interest. The payments go to the Fuller Center and are then rolled over into the next building project. Hence, the need to select the most deserving applicant because it truly is a 30 year partnership.
Asking Dr McBride what is the ultimate goal for him in this process here, his response was priceless.
” For us to build another house and then after that, another House,” McBride said. ” After that, build another house and another house.
The side deck of the Nester house.
Another very unique aspect to the program is each Owner is required to provide 150 hours of actual work on their home (notice Amber priming the walls) and produce a second person who will provide 200 hours of effort.
The number of hands that touch one of the homes from start to finish is astounding. Dr McBride described the efforts involving the walls that were built by a Church outside of the Richmond area.
The Church βͺ gathered in their parking lot on a Saturday morning and built the walls for the latest house. The group was finishing up π¨ hammering the final nails when the vehicle arrived to pick them up.
We are prepared to write β about the efforts of The Fuller Center for Housing until we run out of people to visit with.
Our next step will be to take you inside the lives and stories of Amber and Katelyn !
Greensboro, North Carolina is well it all started 40 years ago for Linda and I so waking up here feels Natural.
The announcement above is for the benefit of a Man named Tony. I don’t know him personally but I here great things about his efforts in our Community and I hope π his Day is a great one
Item #2 – I know that there are many, many diehard Hokie fans out there so let’s acknowledge their biggest Win of the season last night π.
They dominated a pretty solid BC squad to move to 4-3 on the season. Kudos to the Hokies !
Item #3 – While I know that the Junior Varsity Football team came up on the short end of the scoreboard for the first time last night (20-0 @ Floyd), I would still like to praise the efforts of the entire Coaching staff.
The team still has two games remaining in what has been an impressive π season.
Item #4 – I wanted to publicly say Thank You π to Shannon Dalton for our Spirited conversation back on Wednesday afternoon. There are a few select few that I get to have that level of conversation with and I am grateful for her existence !
Item #5 – Dr Oliver McBride, I want to be just like him when I grow up ! We spent two hours together again yesterday afternoon and he introduced me to some more amazing folks yesterday ! I am looking forward to writing β those stories…
Item #6 – Here’s hoping that everything π goes flawlessly tonight in regards to Homecoming. The Dance π, the Ball Game and everything in between. Props to everyone who touched the event because there’s a great deal of effort that goes into pulling something this size off.
Item #7 – West Long has checked in this morning π!
Item #8 – Thank You π Travis Osborne β€ for your Message this morning π. Greatly appreciated π
Item #9 + 10 + 11 –
It’s extremely rare that there are three possible destinations for the end of the night π but that’s the case tonight. It could be Boone, NC or Wilkesboro, NC or Durham, NC ???
All three of these events are very important to us but while I have mastered the ability to squeeze 20 hours out of a single Day, I have yet to discover how to be in multiple places at the same time…..The length of the meeting that I’m about to attend will help dictate the answer.
Item #12 – While it was for just a few minutes last night, I want to applaud the fact that Corrie Delp entered our Volleyball π match. The energetic Junior suffered a broken ankle just before the start of the season and has worked HARD to rehab. She finished her very first point with a Block !
The victory pushed Head Coach Cindy Edwards and her squad to 7-4 in the Three Rivers District, which secures the team a birth in the District Final Four. Patrick County entered the night with a remote chance at tying Carroll County for the fourth and final spot.
The battle in the opening set did not take place until the very end. CCHS led 19-10 after Laiken Burnett (22 Assists, 17 Digs) executed a Quarterback Sneak (Setter Dump is the technical term). It was at that point that the Cougars upped their game. They closed the lead down to 24-20 and was serving when a service error allowed the Lady Cavaliers to escape with a 25-20 victory.
The second set was unlike anything that Carroll County has experienced. The teams were tied at 9 and stayed that way at every point between 9 and 20. CCHS scored the next two points on Kills by Brooke Webb and Ali Wright ( 12 Kills, 7 Digs)to finally break the string but Patrick County answered with three straight points to lead 23-22.
Facing the possibility of the match being tied at one set each, Carroll County answered with their own three spot. Wright tied the set and Aza Petty closed out the nail bighter 25-23.
The third set mirrored the second one with the contest being the Cougars ability to land BIG swings versus the Lady Cavaliers ability to Dig the balls out. During the match CCHS executed four Pancake Digs, including two on the same play. Callie Harris reached double figures with 12 Digs in addition to having 3 Aces.
The closeout set did not include a single run greater than three points by either team. The teams were tied 10 times by the point where it was 15-15 and thats when CCHS scored three unanswered to force a time out from PCHS.
The Cougars answered again, pulling within 22-21, forcing Coach Edwards to call a timeout. Raylee Goins made the next Kill and it was the one that took the wind out of the visitors sails β΅. Two more points closed out the night π and set up a trip over to Alleghany on Monday October 28th for a District Semi-final match.
The Finals will be played on Wednesday October 30th.
Carroll County will be off until next Thursday night when the travel up to Radford(7-3 TRD) to close out the regular season. In their match on The Hill Carroll County led 2-0 before the Bobcats stormed back to win 3-2.
James River (6-3) made the race to the finish a bit more interesting when the Knights hosted and swept the Bobcats Wednesday night. JRHS swept Carroll County so they hold the tiebreaker. The Knights have three matches remaining and will be heavy favorites in all three.
Alleghany (9-1 TRD) has clinched the Regular Season Championship, giving them the honor π of hosting the District Tourney Championship.
In regards to the Regional tournament the Lady Cavaliers currently are holding down the #7 seed. If holds up the team would host a 7 vs 10 Play In game on Saturday November 2nd.
