Mr. Gallimore and I have been trying hard to get an understanding on the Region 3D Softball bracket and schedule π and I’m finally up to speed!
The first of four QF contests was played last night π up in Roanoke and we have our second upset if you will. Abingdon came in as the #6 seed and yesterday afternoon they made the long bus π ride up to Cave Spring and rallied to win 4-3 in eight innings.
AHS now awaits the winner of #2 Staunton River versus #10 – William Byrd.
WBHS recorded upset number one in the play-in round, defeating Tunstall 7-4.
The three remaining QF contests begin tonight at 6pm at Cavalier Park, Staunton River and Christiansburg.
The semi-finals are slated to be played in a window of next Monday and Tuesday.
We held a pre-game Ceremony Tuesday night π at Cavalier Park with the hopes of honoring the group that I like to call The Fab Four. CCHS has four Seniors that will be leaving The Hill with their degree and at least one very persteogus career record.
We celebrated both Emma Leath (Pitching wins & Strikouts) and Jabin Talley (Tennis πΎ victories) but lost out on Ashlyn Newman (Soccer β½οΈ Goals scored) and Alyssa Ervin (Basketball π Points scored).
Newman and Ervin were both down in Mount Airy, North Carolina that night accepting awards they had won π from the local newspaper π° group that includes our Carroll News.
It’s worth noting that Talley missed out on chasing down a legend to claim the top spot , he missed out on his farewell match as well. Ervin and Erin Gibson, Leath and Sydney Nester plus Newman and Adrienne Harris will be linked for quite sometime but Talley not only missed out part but his final match on The Hill was postponed multiple times and finally canceled.
Back to the task at hand, after Newman and Ervin could not attend on Tuesday night the offer was made for them to join us tonight. While Ervin will once again be out of town for a ceremony, we have a chance at seeing Miss Newman at the park tonight. That’s assuming she has been able to catch her breath after last night’s match that ended close to three hours after it began over in Martinsville. The ending of her High School π« Soccer career was as much storybook as the rest of her time on The Hill.
The only way the ending could have been greater was if it had came in the State Championship game. While the Battling Ben Tickles fell just short in a Penalty Kick shootout to #1 seed Magna Vista, nobody that played in or witnessed the game will forget it anytime soon. That’s exactly how I would describe Ashlyn Newman as a person – no one will forget her anytime soon !
The list of accomplishments that Newman has to her credit at this point in her life looks to be photo shopped. Can one person really have achieved so much so soon in her life?
The second half of this question is how does someone wanting to describe said list possibly pick out the correct information to share ?
Challenge accepted π…
Also joining us tonight is each of the State Qualifying Student Athletes that compete for Head Coach Shawn Montgomery in Track π£ and Field.
By my unofficial count we have four folks that make the list this year after Davis Reitzel added his name to the list yesterday down in Abingdon.
Reitzel will be busy tonight playing in the Boys π¦ Soccer regional match and Ervin will be out of town but we hope to see both Corrie Delp and Brayden Smoot this evening.
Delp is heading to State for the second time after her and Elijah Smith made the trip last year.
Our game won’t be the only one taking place tonight as the other two teams still playing will also be in action. Best of Luck to both Kevin DeHaven and his Baseball βΎοΈ team and Forrest Johnson with his Boys π¦ Soccer β½οΈ team.
