Holly Miller is taking her turn at running 🏃‍♂️ the Family 👪 Business.

Holly Miller is making a name for herself these days playing centerfield for veteran Head Coach Rick Nester. The sophomore has speed to burn 🔥 but its not just speed that sets Miller apart, her knowledge of the game and her throwing arm will get the attention of fans both at Cavalier Park and on the road.

Carroll County having a ballplayer named Miller playing centerfield is nothing new for Nester. It was 20 years ago that Holly’s Father Hix Miller, roamed center under the guidance of Nester during his four years on the Varsity Baseball team.

Hix played the position with the same level of dedication and tenacity that his daughter plays with today. At the end of his time on The Hill Miller was able to play the game at the next level. Miller remained a Cavalier, playing ball at UVA-WISE.

Now Miller spends his spare time, which is in limited supply, watching and admiring his daughter as she plays the same position and under the tutelage of Coach Nester.

Miller has nothing but appreciation for his playing days at Carroll County and his time working under Nester, especially as his outfield coach. Miller earned All-State honors his Senior season on The Hill.

” Holly’s competitiveness is also a lot like mine,” said Hix Miller. “She is her own worst critic and expects perfection out of herself like I used to.”

Holly Miller is part of a Lady Cavalier team that has opened the season at 11-0 after last night’s 3-0 victory over visiting Galax. This group has exceeded all expectations up to this point, including the ones of the coaching staff. Nester started the season with seven players who had yet to play a single inning at the top level.

Emma Leath and Katherine Lindamood provide the Senior leadership on a roster filled with very coachable young ladies. Leath’s ability to Strike Out batters on a regular basis puts a little extra pressure on the defense in that one never knows when the ball will be hit in their direction.

Last night a total of two balls made it to the outfield and on both occasions the plays that were made kept the No-hitter in tact. Scouting reports should show by now that the Lady 👩 Cavaliers play near flawlessly in the field, so if you are capable of putting one in play off Leath it doesn’t guarantee you will have a base hit to show for your efforts.

The second generation Miller is just starting her journey and know that her Father is loving his little girl taking over the Family 👪 business. The fact that is doing so for a Coach that he knows and trusts just gives him one less worry on game nights.

Speaking of the Family 👪 business, Hix is currently coaching his Son, Daniel in Dixie Youth baseball. Daniel is in his freshman year at CCHS.

How bright is the future of both Holly Miller and the rest of the Sophomore class playing softball this season ?

It might be time to see about getting them some sun glasses 🕶!!! It’s safe to say that none of the players are old enough to get that reference but maybe some of the parents and grandparents might…….

Emma Leath and the Lady Cavaliers make quick work of visiting Galax with 3-0 No-hitter

The dust had barely settled on the Thursday night 2-1 thrilling victory at Radford when Head Coach Rick Nester filled out his lineup card for the Galax tilt back on The Hill.

The veteran coach penned in Emma Leath to bat second and head out to the pitching circle and his Senior didn’t disappoint. Ten strikeouts and no hits later, Carroll County toppled Galax 3-0 to move to 11-0 on the season.

The performance followed a pregame ceremony in which Leath caught a ceremonial First Pitch from her Father, Travis Leath.

The double digit strike out performance leaves the right hander at 630 in her persuit of the School record of 694.

Carroll County collected 9 hits against a pair of Galax pitchers but never picked up the clutch hit that would have broken the game out of reach. Emma Harman , Brooke Webb and Madison Coleman each finished with two base hits to lead the offense and Holly Miller made the one remarkable play behind Leath to protect the no-no.

Innings one through five were nothing short of a pitching clinic from Leath as Galax sent 15 batters to the plate and all 15 headed back to the dugout. Nine were by strikeout and six retired by the infield but things changed in the top of the sixth.

Hylee Holt led off the inning with a line drive that was dropped for the lone error for the Cavaliers. One strikeout later Jayden Leonard sent a shot through the right side of the infield for what appeared to be the first base hit of the game but Miller charged the ball and fired it to second base for the put out. Leonard officially reached base on a fielders choice and Leath retired the final four batters with help coming from Brooke Webb in left field for the final out of the contest.

Carroll County scratched out single runs in the second, fourth and six innings with Harman crossing the plate the first two times and Natalie Burress adding the final run.

Harman led off the second inning with a single, promptly stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. Burress picked up the RBI by laying down a sacrifice bunt.

Harman singled again in the fourth inning and came around to score curtosey of a Madison Coleman RBI single.

Burress added some insurance by singling with one out and scoring on the second hit on the night by Webb.

The victory marks the start of the second half of the 20 game regular season. The Lady Cavaliers made the turn at a perfect 10-0 and now stand at 11-0 ahead of a scheduled double header against visiting Alleghany on Tuesday. The two teams split the double header last season at AHS.

The final few weeks of the season promise to be busy ones as the team remains three games down with one at Floyd County, one home to James River and one home to Pulaski County.

The recorded no-hitter was the second for Leath as Cavalier with both efforts coming against the Maroon Tide.

Shannon Dalton checks ✔ in from Greensboro, Pool Side !

Swim meet tonight in Greensboro! Representing the Twin Counties tonight were Briar Sessions (Galax), and Bradley and Will Dalton (Carroll).

Friday Night Races with STAR Aquatics opened the long course season. Most of the swim year is short course – 25 yard pools with plenty of turns. But in the summer, USA Swim teams shift to long course – 50 meters (like you see if you watch Olympic swimming on TV). And 50 meters is definitely a long way down the pool.

Sessions swam 100 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM. Bradley Dalton swam 50 free, 100 breast, and 200 IM. Will Dalton checked in with 100 back, 50 free, and 50 fly.

All three probably had their best races tonight in freestyle.

And don’t forget that if this looks fun, you’re just a trip to the CWC away from having a fun summer at the pool! Summer registration is open!

Thank You to our Swim 🏊‍♂️ Ambassador, Mrs. Shannon Dalton !
