Callie Harris is the youngest of three sisters and is trying to play out of the shadow of both Natalie and Adrienne, two older siblings that have taken their talents to Emory and Henry.
Ervin is furthering her casting of a shadow that might be around The Hill for a long, long time.
Starting with Harris, a sophomore that has quietly started for the Varsity squads of Cindy Edwards, Marc Motley and now Ben Tickle. Playing all three sports on the Varsity level as a sophomore is an achievement on its own, making the starting lineup in each takes a determined athlete.
Another challenge in playing three Varsity sports is learning how to adjust to the voice of three different Coaches. In the fall both of these young ladies play for Hall of Fame Coach Cindy Edwards.
Harris is just starting her career under Edwards and the veteran coach is looking forward to having her around for two more years. Ervin finished up her time under Edwards and to say she left an impression is quite the understatement.
” Alyssa is a tremendous althele who works extremely hard for the love of her sport of basketball by Doing this she has been recognized and able to get a scholarship she is the best female althele to come from Carroll County High School. To receive POY in the district for Volleyball and Basketball timesland player of the year in Basketball and State POY 2 years in a row the runs track and already qualified for STATE in track she is for she a once in a life time althele.”
Edwards said goodbye to Ervin after the team fell in the Regional tournament but she’s just saying hello to another Harris daughter.
“Callie is also very much gifted althele you again don’t see many 3 sport altheles anymore but we’re also blessed to see her grow for two more years,” said Edwards.
Coach Motley entered the basketball season with four Senior starters, including Ervin, who was on her way to becoming the All-Time scoring leader in the history of the school, but was needing someone to step up and claim the fifth starting spot.
Ervin did not disappoint in her fourth and final season wearing the Cavalier jersey. She lead the team back to the State Tournament, breaking the scoring record and then the 2,000 point barrier along the way. Add State Player of the Year to the list of accolades the 5’11 earned before playing her last High School basketball game.
To the surprise of many it was the undersized Harris that stepped up to become the fifth starter that Motley needed. Standing just 5’3 , Harris showed a level of toughness both mentally and physically. Playing point guard on a team with four Senior starters could have easily been too much for Harris but it simply wasn’t the case.
What Harris lacked in height she made up for with her brain and her heart. The more comfortable Harris became with her jump shot, the more the floor opened up for Ervin.
Two seasons down and two post season runs were now in the rear view but both Harris and Ervin had unfinished business heading into the spring season.
Harris traded her basketball sneakers π for soccer β½οΈ cleats and is currently playing for new coach, Ben Tickle. Once again our super soph finds herself sharing the game with an amazing player. Senior Ashlyn Newman is presently chasing the oldest Harris daughter, Adrienne, on the All-Time scoring leader in School history.
” Callie is not only gifted athletic, she is a very hard worker. She is also super competitive. Of course, that runs in her family. The one thing that has really stood out to me this year is that Callie is a TEAM player! She couldn’t care less about her individual stats. She is in it to win as a team, and she is extremely supportive of her teammates, ” said Coach Ben Tickle.
The difference in Soccer is that if Newman is the equivalent of Batman then Harris is her Robin. The team was suffered just one setback and in their most recent win over Patrick County, Newman finished with 3 goals and 1assit and Harris with 1 goal and 2 assists.
Harris is handling her current situation well enough and is flirting with the idea of expanding on the three sport status. If Harris can maintain this pace or even increase the work load going forward we might have to start asking Adrienne, aren’t you the older sister of Callie Harris ?
Taking the story full circle, the performance of Ervin on Coach Shawn Montgomery’s Track and Field team is something that falls under the category of legendary. For someone who has accomplished what Ervin has already done at Carroll County High School, one might ask where would the motivation come from ?
The answer there is Ervin is a competitor and when you are driven to the level she is, you simply want to compete. The fact that Ervin is fast is last weeks news but the hurdles and high jump are not things that normal folks just pick up as a hobby.
Coach Montgomery welcomed Ervin to his team and appreciates more than just her athletic abilities.
“Natural athlete. Very competitive and good teammate who wants the team to succeed. Picked up the high jump immediately,” noted Montgomery.
Ervin has already qualified for the State Tournament in the High Jump after four meets, hitting 5’0 up at Glenvar last week. Last year Coach Montgomery went to the State Tournament with a party of two in Senior Elijah Smith and Freshman Corrie Delp. It’s only mid April and three Cavaliers have already punched tickets with Ervin, Delp and Brayden Smoot all being packed and ready to go.
Harris and Ervin are just two of the young ladies that represent Carroll County on multiple venues. Delp, Sarah Alderman, Laiken Burnett, Savannah Swecker and a handful of others are members of three teams and do the Community proud from the start of the school year until the end of the last game in spring.
Today we just focused on one Student Athlete that is much tougher than she looks and s second Student Athlete that borders on un describable.. Two plus years left on the calender for Harris and just a few weeks left for Ervin.
The home stretch should be amazing as Newman persuses Harris, Emma Leath chases Sydney Nester while Delp chases a number of things and Ervin, who at this point is simply chasing herself.
