Just when you think that you have seen every possible ending to a Softball game, Carroll County’s 6-5 Three Rivers District victory over Glenvar Tuesday night adds one to the list.
The Lady π© Cavaliers (6-0) scratched out the lead run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Emma Leath led off with a double and the senior came around to give the Cavaliers the lead when the Highlanders committed an error following a bunt single from Katherine Lindamood.
Leath earned her sixth victory of the season but struggled ever so slightly with the first four batters in the top heavy Glenvar lineup. Leadoff hitter Amelia Gierke reached for the third straight time by beating out an infield single on a bang bang play to start the seventh inning.
Abby Tuebert followed with her third consecutive hit to put the tying run on second base. Hannah Street bunted the runners over to second and third base with one out, setting up the game ending double play.
Clean up hitter Claire Spence came to the plate fresh off a 3-run Home Run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. Spence laced a shot back up the middle that hung up long enough for centerfielder Holly Miller to come in and make a nice running catch for the second out.
Miller fired the ball towards home plate but Gierke beat the throw to the plate to tie the game at 6-6, or so it appeared. Lady Cavalier Head Coach Rick Nester had Leath challenge the fact that the runner had left to early and the base umpire ruled in favor of Carroll County. In the blink of an eye the contest was over and CCHS remained undefeated.
CCHS jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Glenvar retired the first two hitters. Lindamood started the rally with a double, followed by a walk to Burnett and a RBI single from Isabella Norman. Emma Harman followed with a RBI single of her own. Natalie Burress and Brooke Webb each added infield singles but the rally ended when Harman was called out at the plate.
The teams traded runs in the third inning with Burnett scoring again after a leadoff walk. Miller lead off the bottom of the fourth inning with an infield single and stolen base, coming around to score on a bunt single by Burnett.
Glenvar battled back from a 5-1 deficit by stringing together five straight hits, including the Home Run from Spence before Carroll County scratched out what prove to be the winning run.

Leath once again went the distance to earn the victory, scattering 11 base hits while recording seven strike outs and no walks. The senior sent five consecutive Highlanders back to the dugout in the second and third innings.
The Junior Varsity team rallied from a 10-5 deficit to claim a 12-10 victory in a contest shortened to four innings due to time restrictions.
Kenzey McMillian earned the victory while Zoey Gywnn plated five runs on two base hits.
