Carroll County ride career nights from Easter and Reece to sail past Galax, 60-38

Here’s a game story that will hopefully get picked up by a few outlets…

Galax, Virginia – Isaiah Easter took charge in the second half and his effort allowed Carroll County to pull away from a pesky Galax team, 60-38

The sophomore finished the first half with just four points and the team leading just 22-13. Ethan Richardson kept the team above water in the first half with a trio of 3-pointers but the rest of the team was struggling with the defense Galax was playing.

” Welcome to coming to Galax to play, they play tough, as usual alot of contact, we started out slow not finishing at the rim,” said Head Coach Anthony Barnes. “Overall our stats were not terrible 41% from floor, 38% from 3pt line, only 7 turnovers, I will take up for them , Glenvar pushed us hard and home 2nd game in a row, not much down time with school too. :”

The combination of trying hard to make up all of the games lost to the weather and the contest being the second of three straight might of had the team a half step off their best game. Easter was the one to step up in the second half and started to dominate the contest. Seven points in the third quarter followed by seven more in the fourth left Easter with a career high 18 points.

If Easter was Batman on the night then Cody Reece was his Robin. The junior spent the first half sacrificing his body in the post before dropping a career high 10 points down the stretch.

The defensive intensity was there from the get go and allowed the Cavaliers to limit a talented Galax team to 38 points on the night. They saying of speed never goes into a slump can be extended to neither does the ability to play in your grill defense

” Davis nor Bryce could get going , but great thing about us we are a TEAM, 18 pts from Easter and 12 from Richardson which had a good night on both ends and 10 from Reece,” added Barnes. “Sometimes games look odd when not scoring the way we can in 2:00 min like crazy. Now onto a third one in a row , thankfully at home hopefully with the pedal to metal.”

Davis Reitzel finished with nine points and Bryce Smoot netted seven so once again, even on an off night the team finished with five players scoring at least seven points.

Galax went on a mini run in the third quarter, trimming a 30-18 lead down to just six points. The next sixty seconds is when Easter put his stamp on the game, starting with a hard drive to the basket on one end and a poster level block shot on the other. He ended any doubt with another drive down the lane for two and then teamed up with Jabin Talley after stealing the inbounds pass. Just like that the Cavaliers had scored 21 points in the third quarter after finishing the opening half with just 22 points on the board.

Reece went into the fourth quarter with just two points before dropping eight more in a flurry. CCHS, as they had the night before versus Glenvar, simply wore down their opponent. Brayden Smoot didn’t score in the game but he looked like the energizer bunny out there, especially on the defensive end.

Friday night the team is back on The Hill to finish off three games in three nights. James River will make the trip down I-81.

Here are some notes – I would normally add a paragraph about the JV game in this spot but tonight I gave them their own gamer.

What happens from here is Allen will take the story, tweak it and then add the official box score that Coach Barnes sent him. After that NewsBreak will pick it up and before you know it 20,000 people have read it.

This group of young men has done everything their Coach has asked of them and their record reflects that.

Hopefully we made some folks smile today !

Mrs. Dalton and I are working on the best way for us to share the information on the Academic teams. She’s light years ahead of me but I’m trying hard !

We were just lucky it was Galax in the pool tonight and not Carroll (although swim is going to catch up with us this Saturday when that team is at the Littles in Bristol and Scholastic Bowl is at Bassett for regions). We have a full slate of academic swimmers: Bradley Dalton, Ethan Edwards, Garrison Wheatley, Andrew Taylor, Nahi Cruz, Jarib Cruz, and Will Dalton. And our academic wrestlers: Trenton Newman and James Mendez. And pretty soon, soccer season and the other spring sports will be catching up with even more of our crew. This is a double, triple, quadruple-duty group if ever there was one.

We will keep plugging away on this until it matches up because the quality of her efforts is overly impressive !

I shouldn’t start naming names because I’m sure I’ve forgotten someone, but it was really cool to see so many co-worker kids who have grown up together with their teacher parents making an impact on the various MACC teams.

MACC is off now until Feb. 5 when we will host Fort Chiswell at home in the CCHS cafeteria at 6 p.m.

Thank You Ma’am for everything that you do and for how well you do it !

First comes column, then Game Story and maybe Sleep 💤

Kris Richardson described it as our version of Carolina- Duke.

Anthony Barnes said Welcome to Carroll – Galax!

Maps shows that the Schools are separated by 15 miles and the VHSL has them 2 levels apart. But let’s use the old sports cliche of when these two teams get together you should toss out the record books 📚.

Carroll County is in the middle of a dream season and currently set atop the Three Rivers District standings. At this point in the season they are a better Basketball team then Galax but Coach Barnes knew he would get the Maroon Tides best punch.

The atmosphere in the Gymnasium was great and it was wonderful to see so many folks on our side of the court floor. Because its a fun manner to write ✍ let’s use this column as a Top 10 List that made it a Great Night for our Cavalier Nation.

The10 Things that happened tonight that made me smile –

#10 – Our scholastic team made the trip as well and that group of hard working Students defeated their Host. We will have more on this here in a bit. Congratulations 👏

#9 – Colton Gravely, Hayden Jackson and Dane Leonard each finished in double figures to lead Jason Stockner’s team to a 💅 bighting 45-40 victory over their host. The group played well all night but had to hold on at the end. Gravely iced the game by sinking three of four free throws down the stretch.

#8 – The crowd from Carroll County that made the drive 🚗 across US-58 to support the team. Extra note 📝 on this one would be the number of players from both levels that were in the crowd. It was my first time seeing our Student section that large at a Road Game. Great atmospher, which I am hoping that we can double or triple up tonight when we host James River.

#7 – After the game our Partner in the coverage for the Boys 👦 program was able to recreate a team photo 📷 of our Boys when they were in the Third Grade.

Number 6

#6 – The level of defense we played from start to finish. We limited a talented ball club to 38 points across 32 minutes. Team defense and it led to instant offense. Isaiah Easter and Cody Reece had matching stuffs that could end up on a poster. Reece in the 1st quarter and Easter in the fourth. The nonstop energy of the Smoot Brothers was fun to watch and Jabin Talley always seems to be in the correct on that end of the floor.

Number 5 –

Davis Reitzel adding one more dunk to his total. Whenever this happens it fires 🔥 up his teammates.

Number #4 – I have been saying all season that the most dangerous thing about our team is that you can’t double team anyone because we can score from all five spots on the floor.

Number #3 – 4 x3 =12 for #20. When Ethan Richardson is in the Zone his 3-point shot is the definition of Silky Smooth. The release of the shot is the key 🔑 and he was as the Kids say, Feeling It.

Number #2 – Easter continues to step up his game and tonight was his best of the season. Our Super Soph collected 14 of his 18 points after the break. The lead was still in single digits in the third quarter when Easter dropped seven and for good measure he added seven more in the fourth, finishing up with 18 points !!!

And Now the #1 thing that me smile 😃 or as Scott Van Pelt says – The Best Thing I saw today:

Cody” Beast Mode ” Reece. Hopefully this will be a break out game for this hard working young man 👨.

Still to come – Gamer for Varsity & report from Mrs. Dalton on the Academic side of the evening.

Junior Varsity Boys hold off late Galax rally to defeat the Maroon Tide, 45-40.

Written By: Homer McHomerson

Galax, Virginia – Dane Leonard, Hayden Jackson and Colton Gravely took turns leading the way for Head Coach Jason Stockner’s Carroll County JV Boys Basketball team to a thrilling 45-40 victory over cross-county rival Galax Thursday night.

Gravely led the balanced attack in the early going when he netted five of his 14 points in the opening quarter. The Cavaliers defense clamped down on the home team, limiting them to just one basket in the opening six minutes. CCHS continued to keep the Maroon Tide’s offense off balance throughout the first half, carrying a 16-7 lead into the break.

Carroll County kicked their offense into another gear in the third quarter as they matched their 16 first half points in the frame. Gravely led the way with six points during the run while his running mates scored three each. The lead was pushed out to a seemingly comfortable 32-19 lead but this was Carroll County – Galax, after all.

Galax quickly trimmed the lead down to 36-28 with 3:03 remaining before Jackson slowed the momentum with his third three pointer of the contest. Moments later Jackson once again drained a 3-pointer to quite the crowd while Leonard added a pair of baskets. Galax would get as close as four at 42-38 with 0:51.2 remaining but Gravely was able to secure the victory by going 3 of 4 from the free throw line.

Gravely and Jackson shared game high honors with 14 points each and Leonard joined them in double digits with 10 points. Carroll County will have a short amount of time to savor the victory as they return home to The Hill tomorrow night to host the Knights of James River.

 Carroll County ….. 8 8 16 13 - 45

  Galax High ……….. 2 5 12 21 - 40

 Carroll County – Gravely 14, Jackson 14, Leonard 10, Reavis 3, Kinder 2, Reed 2 (45)

 3- Pointers – Jackson (4)

Colton Gravely sealed the deal with three late free throws.
