Fresh off their victories last night in Radford, both of the Girls squads are preparing for more Three Rivers District competition.

 Also on the docket tonight is Swimming 🏊‍♂️ up in the Roanoke area. Both of our Varsity squads will be competing in Lord Botetourt’s back yard.

Radford – Carroll County Head Coach Marc Motley had plenty to smile about Monday night as his Cavaliers defeated a much improved Radford Bobcats team, 67-28 behind 33 points from Alyssa Ervin.

 Ervin scored 29 of those points in the first half with 18 coming in an amazing second quarter. Radford played toe to toe with Carroll County early and even trimmed the lead down to 7-6 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Cavaliers proceeded to outscore the Bobcats 30-0 over the next nine minutes before Radford made a 3-pointer just before halftime. Even that basket was answered by Ervin hitting Laiken Burnett with a half court pass for a basket that pushed the lead to 39-9 at the break.

” Radford is a better team then before and they were playing hard,” Motley said. ” But our team defense in the second quarter held them to just three points. Everyone I put out there was a part of that effort.”

 With Ervin playing for just a few minutes after the break due to the size of the lead, Motley was able to mix and match his youngsters for the entire second half.

Katie Lam scored 11 of her 15 points in the third quarter and then took a seat next to Ervin for the remainder of the game. The effort put forth by the entire team the rest of the way made the bus ride back to The Hill an enjoyable one.

 ” Madison Coleman just took over there in the fourth quarter,” Motley added. ” Madison went from not having scored this season to finishing up with six points.”

 Motley also pointed out that Savannah Swecker scored her first points of the season and while Bayliegh Allen didn’t score she played solid defense and blocked out well.

Carroll County is at the beginning of a long week as the team will play four times in five days. Starting out the stretch in a positive manor was key and they but a check in that box.

CCHS did have a scare in the final minute of the game when Amie Delp fell to the floor and dislocated her shoulder. The Delp family was able to report that the issue had been corrected.

Tuesday they return to The Hill to host Alleghany and follow that up on Wednesday night by hosting Glenvar. The game with the Highlanders will be a 5:30 tip as its the front end of a Varsity only twin bill.

Carroll County captured the opener as well with Kayla Young scoring 16 points to lead the way in the JV’s 52-33 victory. Laynie-Jo Leonard finished up with nine points and Raylee Goins poured in eight points.

 The JV team will take the court at 5:30 Tuesday night versus Alleghany.

Radford – This time last year this game didn’t take place as Radford was not able to field a JV team but this time around Head Coach Kayla Nester was able to put her team on the floor. The Lady Cavaliers made the most of the opportunity, winning each quarter on their way to a 52-33 Three Rivers District contest.

 Kayla Young split her game high 16 points evenly between the four quarters while receiving plenty of assistance from her teammates. After struggling at the free throw line in the opening frame (6-12, 50%), the Cavs hit their marks throughout a night were there was plenty of physical play on both sides.

Laynie-Jo Leonard dropped in nine points and Raylee Goins eight for her older Sister / Head Coach.

 Radford has made great strides in their rebuilding of the program from scratch but the Cavaliers weren’t going to be denied. Pounding the glass and pushing the basketball up the floor from start to finish were two of the keys 🔑 to success for the team. All 11 of the players recorded time on the floor and seven of them scored at least one basket.

CC Mitchell continues to gain experience since being called up to the team and the youngster netted six points, all in the first half. Kenzey McMillan joined Mitchell at six points and Faith Clontz dropped five. Natalie Burress accounted for the remaining two points.

 The team will have a quick turnaround as they are scheduled to play back on The Hill Tuesday night versus Alleghany at 5:30.
