Floyd, Virginia – Veteran Coach Marc Motley challenged his team at halftime to stick to his game plan and the Lady Cavaliers responded with 16 impressive minutes that carried the team to a Three Rivers District victory over host Floyd County, 71-54.
Carroll County had stumbled out of the gate, falling behind 12-5 in addition to Alyssa Ervin being saddled with her second foul in the opening quarter. Ervin avoided foul number three for the remainder of the contest but FCHS netted three straight 3-pointers late in the second quarter to tie the contest at 28-28 at the half.
The second half defense from the Cavaliers kept the pressure on the home team the rest of the way and a number of steals left to door open for the team to rack up 43 points in the second half.
Ervin led the offense with a game high 33 points (spread out evenly across the four quarters -8,9,8,8) but her ability to feed the basketball to open teammates was equally impressive. Both Katie Lam (19 points) and Sarah Alderman (10 points) joined Ervin in double figures before the games end. Alderman, playing highly energized down the stretch netted eight of her points in the fourth quarter.
βAlderman sank four of five free throws down the stretch and Ervin added seven of nine from the stripe, leaving the team at 78% for the game.
βCorrie Delp (4 pts), Callie Harris (3 pts) and Madison Lyons (2 pts) each added to the offense at critical times in the second half, keeping the home team from getting back into the contest.
The knockout blow came in the thirty seconds that overlapped the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter. With the lead at 42-37, Delp swiped a pass under the basket and converted the lay-up ahead of Harris sinking a 3- pointer before the horn and then Ervin finding Alderman alone for an And One on the opening play of the fourth quarter. The lead was suddenly in double figures and would remain that way until the final buzzer.
Coach Motley was quick to praise the defensive effort of Lam throughout the contest in addition to the effort he received across the board in the second half of play.
Carroll County will have a limited amount of time to celebrate the victory as they are scheduled to cross Lovers Leap for their initial District contest with newest member Patrick County at 5:30 pm Friday.
βIn the Junior Varsity contest Kayla Young netted 21 points to lead the Lady π© Cavaliers into Overtime in the opening contest. Floyd County prevailed in the extra period, 46-43 in a highly spirited game from beginning to end. Laynie-Jo Leonard added 10 points to join Young in double figures.
Both Faith Clontz and Raylee Goins finished with four points while Natalie Burress and Kenzey McMillan both scored a basket for the Lady Cavaliers in overtime.
βThe Junior Varsity team is finished for the week as the Friday games at Patrick County are Varsity only.
