Cavalier Boys play an inspired fourth quarter but eventually fall short for the first time this season.

Floyd,Virginia – Carroll County scored 26 points down the stretch Friday with five different players contributing to the comeback but fell short in the end, 66-55 to Alleghany High School.

Alleghany made some major adjustments after falling 91-61 on the Hill three days earlier. The most noticeable one was crashing the offensive glass which in turn limited the fast breaks down the floor for Carroll County. The Cougars went to the halftime break leading 23-14, the first time the Cavaliers trailed at the half.

While the contest was part of the Annual Chase Harmon Invitational it also counts as the regular season away game at Alleghany. The decision leaves the teams all square and the teams to beat in the Three Rivers District regular season.

โ€‚The Cougars stretched their lead to 45-29 at the end of the third quarter but the Cavaliers refused to concede anything, not while there was time left on the scoreboard clock.

The late rally started with an 8-0 burst highlighted by a hustle steal and dunk by Davis Reitzel and a pair of 3-pointers. Reitzel netted 10 of his team high 15 points during the late run and Bryce Smoot added 14 with a trio of 3-pointers. Jabin Talley scored all five of his points in a blur halfway through the fourth quarter, cutting the lead down to a manageable 52-46 but the Cavaliers couldn’t get any closer the rest of the contest.

โ€‚Head Coach Anthony Barnes took his teams initial defeat in stride.

” We had a tough game , gave up 13 second shots with them and did not control the boards,we missed 7 free-throws”, said Barnes. ” We didn’t finish well at the rim 5 close missies come to mind”.

โ€‚The Cavaliers only have one flaw in their rotation and its a lack of size beyond Reitzel and Cody Reece. It can only be exposed by a squad stuff full of six footers plus and that happens to be just what the Cougars have. Two early fouls on Reitzel limited his early aggressiveness and by games end four of the five Cavs starters had picked up their fourth foul.

โ€‚Facing an incredibly uphill battle away from home, trailing by 16 points to an impressive team, the Cavaliers kept at it and that should be the take away from the afternoon.

” Theyโ€‚are a solid, well coached team and we had the worst shooting game of the year by far for us, around 30% from floor,” added Barnes. ” They did an excellent job on Davis constantly with him and banging on him and kept him away from rim and in check, we only turned it over 6 times. We will be fine, we are good. Gotta keep nose the grindstone and keep working and fine tuning. I told guys you learn more from an 11 point loss than a 30 point blowout.”

Nose to the grindstone resumes on the road Monday night in Buchanan at James River.
