For 3+ years Elijah Smith was an observer in regards to the Sports scene at Carroll County High School. Then just like the Car π commercials where they talk about going from Zero to Sixty in a matter of seconds, Smith hit the ground running πββοΈ.
The story goes that it was some members of the Track and Field team approached Smith about coming out for the team at the end of his Senior year. Smith took it from there and taught himself how to both toss a Discus and push a Shotput.
Smith proved to be a quick learner and then some as the season progressed and by the end of the regular season he had earned an invitation to the State Tournament in Lynchburg.
After placing 9th at State Smith received another invite, this time to the Addias National Event in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina. There is a certain amount of humor in the fact that the Smith family traveled fewer miles to the National event then they did to the State meet.
Nationals had over 3,500 athletes in attendance and the Discus event alone had 76 entries. Smith placed 30th in the overcrowded field which is commendable on its own but the Big News comes from hearing that our newly created Student Athlete is going to continue his pursuit of Track and Field beyond High School π«.
Smith is on his way to WCC for College and the search is already on for ways to compete in his newly found passion!
Smith and his story is a breathe of Fresh Air and its exciting to know that it hasn’t come to an end!
Everything that will appear in the soon to be released Book on the Girls π§ Basketball π program has been forwarded to Nancy. Her office π’ will be putting the final touches on our work and the Hope is that we will be able to cross the Finish Line shortly !!!
After a very hot, 85 + degree day, Corrie ended up placing 36th in the girls freshman elite 100m with a 13.52.
This was about 3:15pm today after the hottest sun-baked day she’s had so far in her career against the best in her class . She was a bit disappointed but I feel she represented herself well considering.
Earlier in the day (still 85 deg before noon), she ended up placing 13th in the girls freshman elite Long Jump.
Her 1st jump of 3 was her best at 15-4.25. Not as good as her state jump, but 13th in the National field today was remarkable. She gained a lot of good experience and hopefully will return and improve on this in the coming years. Like I told her: state was the cake; today was the icing on the cake. She got a taste of it.
Most of the time when information is sent in to us I break it down and put it inside of a story but this time I felt that Corrie’s Father π¨ described the experience well enough that is deserved to be a stand alone update.
Corrie is just scratching the surface in her Track and Field Career and we will look forward to watching π her continue to grow for over the next three years.
