Our old friends (Last year’s Finals opponent)Meridian, claim this years first Region Championship

Top seeded Meridian claimed the first of the four Regional Championships tonight at home over #3 Brentsville District by a score of 37-31. Both teams will have to wait a few days to find out their next opponent as the Tidewater Region has yet to play their semifinal games.

The Mustangs sit at 24-1 with their lone loss coming at Spotswood 71-53 back on December 16th.

Tomorrow afternoon at 4pm in Lynchburg will have Spotswood playing Liberty Christian Academy and then at ***6pm on the Hill will be Lord Botetourt and the Cavaliers.

Once those two games have been played the teams will be off until next weekend when the foursome will switch partners in the State Quarterfinals.

No Glass Slipper needed for the Class 3 Girls State Tournament now

The first six teams to advance to the State Tournament are ranked as follows –

#1 – Carroll County

#2 – Meridian – Falls Church

#3 – Spotswood

#5 – Lord Botetourt

#7 – Liberty Christian

#9 – Brentville District

The four teams vying for the final two spots include #4, #10, #13 and #16.

1 vs 2, 1 vs 2, 1 vs 3 and Chalk in the Region playing one game behind shows you just how tough the competition is at the Top of the Class 3 bracket.

#1, #3, #5 & #7 are all on one half of the bracket and the team that survives that side will likely find either #2 Meridian or #4 Hopewell waiting in the Championship game in Richmond.

Four games remain for most of the group with five for the Tidewater side and one thing is for sure now, there would not appear to be any remaining easy outs.
