By my count I was there for all but 3 games for our JV Girls π§ season up until today so there was simply no way I wouldn’t make it to Floyd County for the 2pm Finale.
I just walked back in the door from Bluefield and the Tech Baseball βΎοΈ team and normally I would write a recap of the game now but this one was too exciting to not want to go into great detail about it. So tomorrow I will write β 7 or 8 articles as I watch the snow β flakes fall.
Before I sign off I want to Thank each and every Family member π that stayed long enough for the picture taking and I promise that those will be put to good use.
Greetings All – Today will be a Day long Post which I will eventually break down into posts with Game / Match coverage..
It’s 6:45am at the Cavaliers Wrestling team is starting to come out of the warmth of the High School and begin the process of loading up the school bus for the trip over to C’Burg High School for their Regional tournament.
The Coaches have everything loaded up and they are pulling out on Bus #35 at 6:48.
The team has safely π arrived at the High School and Coach Bowman has given me a few minutes with each of his nine wrestlers that made the trip up.
Once everything is unloaded from the Bus the team prepares for the 8:30 Weigh In up in the Gym.
Your 2022-2023 Wrestling team members – Bios to follow separately.
The 8:30 Weigh Ins are now complete and each of our Wrestlers healthy enough to compete made his or her weight limit!
Michael Cruz has a broken elbow, Silas Warren is dealing with an injured shoulder, Caleb Fitchett has a hip injury and Austin Nester is ill which is why he’s not pictured with the others.
9:00 am – Wrestlers have begun their warm-ups and the Coaches meeting will take place at 9:15am.
CCHS gets their turn at practice at 9:20. The school internet is working great for the typing but is struggling with the photos so most of those will come later.
Earlier this morning I mentioned that was a number of sporting events to get to today and now is a good time to roll out the rest of the day.
Next stop after the Wrestling Match is down Highway π£ 8 to Floyd County for the JV Girls Basketball π game at 2pm. Then its off to Bluefield for a baseball βΎοΈ twin Bill between our West Virginia Tech Golden Bears π» and Bluefield. All I have to do for that is to remember to switch Blogs at that point.
The doors are now open to the public and with the three wrestling mats in play this year there will be less seating available for the fans. But on the other side of it is the meet as a whole should have more of a flow to it.
The National Anthem has been played and we are set to start right at 10:00am
11 Total Wrestlers, 10 Here Today & 7 Active
Let’s Go Cavaliers !
Scoring – 6 points for a Pin π, 3 points for a victory between 1 &7, 4 points if the margin is 8 or above.
Sitting amongst our team as they monitor their cellphones for updates on when they are set to wrestle. Once they are in the Hole position they head down to start getting loose. The Hole being the same as baseball, the step after on deck.
****** 15 Weight Classes and we will be competing in Seven of them.
Round 1 is complete now at 10:25 and there will be a 15 minute break until 10:40am. Great news for the Cavaliers is that all seven of our Wrestlers advanced to the Quarterfinals with a Bye in each of the matches.
Each bracket is now balanced with 8 Wrestlers remaining and the event is a double elimination competition.
Amelia (106), Nathaniel (138), Christian(144), Tony (165), Louis (215) and Logan (285) are all getting ready to take to the mat for the first time today.
QUARTERFINALS (10:40)
Amelia wrestling in the QF
The Cavaliers have completed their 7 QF matches and there will be more pictures later. As the round concludes they have announced that there will be a break until 1pm. I owe an apology to Louis as he won his match so quickly my pics of him are as the match was ending.
The QF round is in the books at 12:19 and there will be a break in the action π¬ until 1pm.
All 7 Cavaliers are still alive with a mix of them in the semifinals as well as mix in the Consolation bracket. The Top 4 in each weight class advances to State.
Time to Head South for the Girls π§ JV Basketball Championship game in Floyd. Coach will update me with results if the meet ends before I get back to C’Burg. Fun and educational 6 hours so far and plenty of stories to tell.
Ready for Round #3 between the CCHS JV Girls π§ at the Floyd County Buffaloes. Floyd swept the first two but the Cavaliers were in both contests right to the end.
Tip is set for 2pm!
Better internet here so I will sneak in some more of the Wrestling pics from earlier.
Floyd County 5-1 after the first seven minutes.
Cavaliers score six points in just over a minute to take the lead at 7-5!
Tied up at 11-11 @ The Half!
Headed to Overtime at 31-31… Level of energy in the gym is amazing!
Trailing by 2 with the ball 0:33.0 left in OT
Plenty of coverage still to come on both the Wrestling and Basketball π but for now its off to Bluefield for some Golden Bears π» Baseball βΎοΈ
Time for what I like to call my Day job so I will switch sites and search for some gloves because its cold π₯Ά in them there Hills.
There will be plenty to come over the next couple of days!
#10 in our program is a 5’10 Senior that just seems to be enjoying life right now. For those who joined us yesterday when we started our series with Elijah Cox, I would like to say Welcome Aboard !
The plan is to share one player a Day for the next 9 Days after Mr.Cox in hopes of letting each young man have a day to themselves.
Let’s get started with the Four questions that Mario answered for us this week. Just incase you haven’t seen the post from yesterday, question #1 is what current or former player would be the best example of how they play the game ?
MARIO – Dennis Rodman, formerly of the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls
Mario was quick to point out that it is Rodmans mentality of defense and rebounding first, not the hair color or the body piercing.
QUESTION #2 – What person in life is the best example of Coach Barnes ?
MARIO – Following the lead of Elijah Cox
Mario also went with Samuel L Jackson as Coach Ken Carter from the 2005 movie about a Coach that was a positive influence on his ball club.
QUESTION #3 – Please share your thoughts on being a part of the Cavaliers Basketball π program –
MARIO – Its been a really fun experience that has allowed me to meet new people and learn about Basketball.
QUESTION #4 – You are on a Podium excepting an Award, who do you want to say Thank You to?
MARIO – My fellow Seniors for making this season so much fun!
Msrio went on to share that his story had a little bit of Michael Jordan to it. Jordan was cut from the school team as a Freshman before becoming Air Jordan. Mario was cut βοΈ when he tried out for the 8th grade team by then Coach Anthony Barnes.
Ladies and Gentlemen – I present to you. #10 Mario Meza Campbell !!!
