Friday will be a Busy Day for the Cavaliers faithful

Four Basketball 🏀 games plus a Hall of Fame event will give all CCHS fans something to look forward to later today. 5:30 is the scheduled start time at both the Middle School and the High School as the Knights of James River visit the Hill.

I wanted to take a moment to say a special Thank You to Lauren’s Mom for helping get the word out about our site as there’s been a noticeable increase in the number of visitors over the past few days.

It’s a good time to offer up a quick recap of the goals we have with the Carroll County Sports Report. Our Non-profit organization Oneofus.care sponsors the site and our goal is to make available Sports information about any Student Athlete that represents CCHS at any level.

There is no cost for folks to use the site and any photo on the site is free for the taking as well. The long term goal is to create an on-line presence for the Cavaliers and nothing else.

There is one very BIG catch in that everything that makes it on the site will remain 100% Positive !

The goal is to fill the gap that not having a Daily newspaper in our area to provide coverage for the teams. We appreciate the efforts of both Weekly papers but we feel that people should be able to know what happened at an sporting event shortly after it happens.

More thoughts to come later but if you are new to the site – Welcome and we hope you enjoy your time here.

Enjoy some Basketball 🏀 tonight and hopefully there will be more Swim 🏊‍♂️ coverage up later from last night’s meet in Daleville.

Today we try to learn about a Day in the Life of the Carroll County High Swim 🏊‍♂️ teams

Greetings from outside the Botetourt Family YMCA in Daleville, Virginia. For the first time this season I have blocked off a day to try and educate myself about the inner workings of a Swim meet day for the Boys and Girls that represent Carroll County High School 🏫.

I will do my best to absorb as much information as possible without getting in the way this evening. I have some many questions about how a meet day works, including the pre-meet warm ups are handled.

The Alleghany County bus arrived at 5:15 and my understanding is the competition gets underway at 7pm. Time to see about going inside and looking around.

The good news I have found the right place and now have a seat just outside the glass at the Waldron Foundation Lap Pool.

Four schools are set to compete in the event tonight including Staunton River, Alleghany, Lord Botetourt and our Cavaliers. I am assuming that being we are a few blocks from LBHS that this is their home pool and they are the host school.

While I wait for it to start I will share what I know about High School Swimming 🏊‍♂️ and Diving competition. It won’t take long as my High School didn’t have it as a sport and somehow in forty plus years of covering Sports until today I’ve never been staring at a Lap Pool waiting for a meet.

Carroll County has both a Boys team and a Girls swim team but doesn’t compete in the diving portion of the Sport. Practices are held right around the corner from the High School in Hillsville but cannot host a meet there because the pool is not set up for diving.

Wytheville is the closest facility to CCHS were a meet can be held and finding nearby meets tend to be a challenge for the Cavaliers.

Tonight’s meet for example is 83 miles and 1 hour 25 minutes from CCHS and a start time of 7:00pm. Not sure how long a four team will last but crunching the estimated numbers as to when the Student Athletes will get back home will be late this evening.

The flow of the event is a story in itself. It truly has a Family feel to it.

Earnie Harris and his wife Stacy are from here in Daleville and I explained to them my desire to educate myself on the process involved in High School Swimming. Stacy eventually had to leave our conversation because she is one of the volunteer timers ⏲️.

I’m taking plenty of notes while watching our swimmers 🏊‍♂️ compete. An evening in the pool has a very unique environment to it and I will do my best to describe it over the next couple of days.

JV Boys Basketball 🏀 fall short at Radford 50-32 Wednesday night

Getting more information about this contest will be a bit of a challenge but it will happen and when it does I will post it here.

The team returns to action Friday night at the Hillsville Middle School when they host the Knights of James River.

Sometimes I just have to laugh at my own level of dedication to things that I believe in. It dawned on me at 11:30 p.m. that if I wanted to know what happened with our JV Boys that I could use the site to watch the game from start to finish.

The game should be over by 1am but I will provide quarter by quarter recaps.

FIRST QUARTER :

CCHS jumped out to a 3-0 lead and the two teams took turns scoring with Isaiah Easter getting the last basket to give the lead at the break 11-9

SECOND QUARTER :

The effort was there throughout the second period for the Cavs but the ball just wouldn’t fall. Radford scored 24 unanswered points to start the frame but CCHS bounced back just before the half.

Jay Burnette made two free throws and Dane Leonard converted a back door cut for a lay-up to give the Cavaliers the final four points.

At the Break – Radford 33, CCHS 15

Cavaliers bounce back nicely, taking the 3rd quarter by a 9-6 margin. A 13-2 run crossed over the quarters.

Easter scored five straight at one point and Landen Puckett plus Burnette went 2 for 2 from the line to account for the Cavaliers points.

FOURTH QUARTER :

Easter adds six more and Leonard hits a pretty floater that pulled the Cavs to within 13 at 45-32 and the Bobcats close out the scoring with five free throws for a 50-32 final.

CCHS played the second half to a 17-17 draw and outscored Radford 21-17 after the deep run 🏃‍♂️ of 24-0 that proved too much to overcome.

Our Boys Basketball 🏀 team aren’t afraid of No Bobcats!

The goal tonight was to collect information about the four sporting events that our Cavaliers were involved in on Wednesday night.

Logic said that if I drove down to Chilhowie and watched the JV Girls play I could then sit down there and watch the CCHS – Radford feed on my phone 📱.

I have to take a minute and flash back to last Fall when I made the circuit with the CCHS football team and reported the games for Max Preps. That was the start of this journey that has me typing now.

It was my first year living here and I wanted to find a way to give back to our new community so I hit the road with very little knowledge of anything.

It was a team that finished up with a 2-8 record but in six of the eight defeats the Cavaliers were in a position to tie or win the game on the final play.

I wrote a story calling them the best 2-8 team I’ve ever watched play. Zero knowledge of the Coaches or the Players on that team but Wow, did they play with a great deal of heart ❤.

Back to the game in Radford tonight, Coach Barnes and his squad were just 48 hours removed from having pushed the District leading Bobcats before falling 54-45. I enjoyed writing ✍ the story about how hard this team plays every night and while they have dropped a few games lately they have taken opponents best punch 👊 and remained standing.

Both Coaches had a day in between to make adjustments and this time it was the Cavaliers making the extended Bus ride prior to the game.

This was primed to be the night that the Cavs would finally be knocked out by an opponent.

CCHS once again opened up strong and scored the games first 7 points and carried an 11-5 lead into the break between the first and second quarters.

How long could our Home Town Five hang around? Radford didn’t draw even until 19-19 and the Cavs answered with three points right before the horn to lead 22-19. Halfway home and never trailing was a great thing.

Radford opened the second half quickly with four points and finally led, 23-22 but not for long as Elijah Cox poured in a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Cavaliers what would prove to be their final lead at 25-23.

Radford quickly scored the next seven points and old Uncle Momentum was clearly on the Bobcats side. Down five and on the cusp of fading away the Cavs bounced back again with three out of four free throws to end the third quarter down just a bucket at 30-28.

4 minutes remained and the Cavs trailed 39-33 and the following possession sums up the Never Say Die of this team. The team came up empty on two attempts but a second offensive board led to Cox completing what the young folks call an And One.

Down 43-39, Bryce Smoot came up with a steal and his two free throws made it an one possession game with 1:46 on the clock ⏰. Like most close games this one would come down to fouls and free throws and the Bobcats are pretty solid from the line.

The final score would end up reading 50-44 and I could have just posted the score and moved on to the next story but that simply wouldn’t do justice to the effort these young men put out every time they lace up their sneakers and take the court as our Cavaliers.

The team returns to action 🎬 Friday night when they host James River on the Hill.

Thank You to Paul for twice checking in from the Radford Gym to make sure I was aware of the happenings – help is always appreciated!

Wednesday night 🌙 was Senior Night for the Cavaliers grapplers

At this hour I don’t have more information about the events that took place at CCHS but if I find anything out it will get added here.

In the meantime I want to say Thank You to Logan Bottomley, Antonio Lugo and Christyan Stillwell for all of the effort that they put forth this season!

Well Done, Gentlemen, Well Done !
