Before the Varsity Girls Tip let’s shine the Light on the JV Ladies

For the second time in the past couple of weeks our JV Girls won’t get to take the court because our opponent doesn’t field a JV team. First it was Radford and tonight its Alleghany that will be Varsity only.

When the JV Ladies do get to take the court they are flourishing under the tutelage of Head Coach Kayla Nester. Impressive victories over Glenvar and James River have allowed all 15 of the team members to gain valuable court time.

We are moments away from our 6:00 tip but here’s a Tip of the Cap for the team that plays at 5:30!

Keep up the Great Work Ladies !

Coaches take on the Alleghany Trek :

” The guys kept their composure and never caved in too the pressure.” Noted Varsity Coach Barnes.

Junior Varsity Head Coach Jason Stockner took the time between the games to share some thoughts on his squads victory.

” Our team played with such resilience from start to finish and it was nice to have the fans making the effort when we were playing so far from home. Also the effort we received from Hayden (Jackson) on the boards tonight was a big help.”

Both teams take to the road Monday night 🌙 at Grayson County.

Last night Bryce Smoot and Elijah Cox played like John Stockton and Karl Malone

Both of the Boys Basketball 🏀 teams from Carroll County High School played complete games last night on the road at Alleghany, sweeping the Mountaineers in dramatic fashion.

Going back a couple of decades in the National Basketball Association the Utah Jazz were led by the Hall of Fame tandem of point guard John Stockton and power forward Karl Malone. An undersized floor leader and a post presence that was a mountain of a man played the game at a level that few duo’s rarely reach.

Last night Smoot played an outstanding floor game against AHS as he and his teammates faced a trapping 1-2-2 zone throughout the evening. The composure the 5’7 sophomore displayed for the bulk of the 36 minutes was worth the price of admission. The two plays that stood out the most set the tone early in the four minute Overtime.

Playing the pick and roll at such a level that the legendary Jazz coaches (Hayden and Sloan) would have been smiling, Smoot feathered perfect passes to a cutting 6’4 Cox that the Senior Big Man finished and the second one sent Cox back to the free throw line for an AND ONE. Smoot extended the OT lead by calmly sinking a pair of free throws to push the lead out to 70-64.

The remaining 32 seconds were non-stop as the home team continued to push the Cavaliers right up until the potential game tying 3-pointer missed the mark. For the second time in 6 days CCHS tied the AHS at the end of regulation and then won during the 4:00 minutes of Overtime.

Cox finished the night with 29 points after connecting on an Amazing 13 of 14 from the charity stripe. Davis Reitzel joined Cox in double figures with 14 points with four more Cavaliers netting at least 7 points. A balanced attack for sure as the Cavs swept the season series with AHS.

Last week it was Reitzel finishing off a perfectly designed play at the basket to force OT but the Cavs needed something different the second time around.

Smoot was fouled in the lane with 0:07.4 left in the contest and made his way to the free throw line. The story of those two tosses belongs to Smoot but they both found the bottom of the net.

Once the Cavs reached OT it was just classic inside out basketball after Ethan Richardson opened the scoring with a 3-pointer.

The Cavaliers are well coached by Anthony Barnes and his three assistant coaches. They listen well and play hard fundamental basketball that is simply fun to watch.

CCHS returns to action on Martin Luther King Jr Day when they travel over to Independence for two games with the Grayson County Blue Devils 😈.

There no guarantees that the Cavs duo will again play like Stockton and Malone but I can promise you that Mr. Barnes will coach them up and they will play hard.

CCHS – 75

Elijah 29, Davis Reitzel 14, Nathan Reed 9, Jabin Talley 8, Ethan Richardson 8, Bryce Smoot 7

Next Up : Boys Varsity Basketball 🏀 @ Alleghany – OT Win Again !!

Let’s Play Ball !

First Quarter was full of runs at AHS bolted to an 8-0 lead before the Cavs went 16-4 and the Mountaineers added the last two buckets.

8:00 minutes in and we are knotted at 16.

After falling behind 29-24 the Cavaliers finished off the first half on a 10-0 spurt. Two 3-pointers, 1 each from Ethan Richardson and Jabin Talley wrapped around an old fashioned 3 point play from Elijah Cox to key 🔑 the run.

Cavs went 7 for 8 from the free throw line with Cox (4 of 4) leading the way. Just as the JV contest went earlier we are in a game of runs.

Cox 10 points, Nathan Reed 7, Davis Reitzel 6, Ethan Richardson 5, Jabin Talley 3, Bryce Smoot 3

Great 3rd quarter of action with AHS taking the frame 19-16, trimming the Cavs lead to 50-48.

JV Boys @ Alleghany – running Blog, W 45-31

The first quarter proved to be one of streaks as CCHS scored the first six points before AHS posted nine unanswered and finally the Cavs scored the final five.

Seven minutes in the books 📚! With the Cavaliers leading 11-9

It’s certainly worth noting that the Cavs are being cheered on by a noticeable group of supporters !

The teams have headed to the locker room with the Cavaliers leading 18-14. After scoring the last five points in the opening frame the Cavs added the first five in the second. The 10-0 run was sparked as much by solid team defense as the ability to score.

AHS did not score in the second quarter until 1:31 remained in the half.

Isiah Easter leads the team in scoring with six points while both Jay Burnette and Blake Reed have added five for the Cavs. Halfway to a road victory!

3RD QUARTER :

Timeout Cavs (3:17) Tied 23-23

Bend but don’t break is best description for the Cavaliers in the third quarter. After AHS tied the score the Cavs refused to fall behind. CCHS leads 27-23 after three!

Fourth Quarter :

29-29 with 5:09 left on the clock ⏰

Gym is starting to fill in nicely

The Cavaliers close out the contest in a BIG WAY!

Easy enough to point to the 30 seconds of play that gave the Cavs the victory. Leading by four at 33-29, Blake Reed feathered a perfect pass to a cutting Landon Puckett for a back door lay-up. A few seconds later ball hawking Dane Leonard stole the ball and finished the play with an AND ONE.

The lead went from four to nine in a flash then Puckett went 2 for 2 from the free throw line. The Cavs closed the contest on a 12-2 run, guaranteeing the Bus 🚌 ride home will be a bit more enjoyable.

AHS tied the game a number of times but never regained the lead in the second half.

Unofficial Scoring : 45

Easter and Leonard with 11 apiece

Reed and Burnette with 7 each

Puckett 4

Dalton 3

Jackson 2
