Varsity Hoops – Radford at Cavaliers…Live Blog

The clock ⏰ for warm-ups is now under 7:00 so we are set for the first of two meetings between the Bobcats and our Cavaliers in the next 48 hours.

Radford is currently sitting atop the Three Rivers District standings after picking up victories over both Floyd County and Glenvar in the past few weeks. The Bobcats should provide Coach Barnes and his squad a great challenge tonight.

#3, #5, #10, #13 and #20 are your Cavs starting five tonight. Let’s play Ball at 7:10pm

Cavs call the games first T.O. @ 3:41, trailing 8-5.

Bryce Smoot has the first five for the Cavs.

Davis Reitzel hits a jumper from the key and Smoot follows with his second 3-pointer, giving the Cavs their first lead.

Great opening 8:00 for the home team !! Only concern is Elijah Cox has two early fouls.

Reitzel is doing an impressive job playing defense on a player that he is giving up three or four inches to. Bryce has his touch working !

Since that last update Reitzel picked up his second and third foul and Radford is trying to pull away before the end of the half.

The second frame started out well but by the end Radford began to distance itself from the Cavaliers, outscoring the home team 20-6. Radford is up 33-23 at the break and Cox, Reitzel and Mario Meza Campbell each have atleast two fouls.

The contest is still well within reach but the next four minutes of action will be crucial for the Cavs.

Meanwhile up in Blacksburg.

Bryce and Reitzel both hit 3-pointers in the opening minute and Cavs are back within reach!

Ethan Richardson is the next Cavalier with three fouls.

Radford has answered with a run of their own and the lead is now 45-33 (3:26) 3rd

Bryce opens the 4th with another 3-pointer, his sixth on the night. 53-41 (7:13)

3:30 remains – Bobcats 57-42

Bryce Smoot with 21 points

Bobcats have subbed out their starters with the score 59-42. Cavs score a quick five points and back come the Radford starters.

59-47 (1:59)

Reitzel with a NBA 3-pointer followed quickly by a normal 3-pointer. 63-53

0:31.8 – Cavs within single digits at 64-55. Riding the 3-Ball with a dozen made to this point.

Once again the Cavs give Coach Barnes 32 minutes of heart ❤, playing at Full Speed right up to the final horn. Story to follow.

Welcome to Bobcats Week!

It will be Carroll County vs Radford for the next three days on the basketball 🏀 court.

Tonight it will be the JV Boys and Varsity Boys taking on their Bobcats counterparts with the tip taking place at 5:30pm

All square at 11-11 after the first quarter. Radford out early but Cavs settled quickly to take their own lead. Five different Cavaliers scored in the first 8 minutes.

Radford supporters not bashful in staying on the refs early but with that said its nice to see as many of them in our gym. Hoping that they all return tomorrow night.

Second quarter was filled with runs as the Cavaliers scored the first five points before Radford answered with 10 straight. Isaiah Easter closed out the scoring with a late basket to trim the CCHS deficit to three points, 21-18.

Cavs have played well in spurts but are having a bit of trouble keeping the Bobcats off the offensive glass.

Fourteen minutes left to play so there’s plenty of time left for the home team to capture the W.

Hayden Jackson had to switch jerseys and is now wearing #54 and 3-pointer just before the end of the frame pulled the Cavs to within five at 34-29.

7:00 minutes to play and we have ourselves a ball game!

Cavaliers call T.O. at 4:10 and the lead is down to one at 35-36

2:26 remains, Bobcats 40-35

Bobcats T.O. (1:02) , leading 42-37

Bobcats 52, Cavaliers 42 (F)

Game story later…

20:00 on the clock ⏰ to Varsity

JV Boys at Glenvar : What a difference 1 second can make

The Cavaliers opened the game up Friday night with one of their most complete quarters of the season. The team defense was swarming and the offense was flowing.

Jay Burnette sank a 3-pointer and both Isaiah Easter and Dane Leonard scored four points early.

Hayden Jackson completed an And One and the Cavaliers were rolling to a 14-4 lead over the home team. The last play on the defensive end led to the ball being knocked out of bounds for what appeared to be a quarter ending play. It turned out that less than one second would remain on the clock ⏰ and the Highlanders tossed the ball to the top of the key for what would be a desperation heave.

The desperate toss found nothing but glass and then bounced in the basket. We are not here to question whether the shot could have possibly been taken in time but to state that it had a huge effect on the momentum of the contest.

A nearly perfect 8:00 minutes had created a comfortable 10 point lead for the Cavaliers and suddenly the lead was down to seven and then a quick bucket to start the second quarter trimmed the lead down to five.

The JV team was in the same situation as the Varsity Boys in that they were playing their fourth game in five nights. Blake Reed hit a critical 3-pointer in the second quarter to keep the lead with the Cavaliers up 21-15 at the break but Glenvar continued to chip away at the lead.

The Cavs finally surrendered the lead early in the final quarter when GHS scored three quick baskets to take a 27-26 lead but the Cavaliers still had some fight left in them.

Burnette drilled a much needed 3-pointer and on the next possession Easter found Leonard under the basket to create a 31-27 lead. That lead would be the final one as Glenvar continued to press every opportunity they had, closing out the contest on a 12-4 run for a 39-35 victory.

CCHS will play three times this week starting Monday when they host Radford. Wednesday night they travel to Radford and then Friday night they host James River.

Our Team of the Week : Girls JV Basketball 🏀

Let’s start the story by going back to Friday night at Glenvar High School 🏫. Head Coach Kayla Nester was preparing her team for a contest against the Highlanders, a team her Cavaliers had defeated 59-4 last month in Hillsville.

Callie Harris, Laiken Burnette, Corrie Delp, Bayleigh Allen and Jocie Dalton took the floor to start the contest for CCHS with a simple plan that included playing the game the right way. When you are facing an opponent that is struggling to compete the challenge has to come from within, or atleast that is what one would think ???

Delp scored four points in each of the first two quarters and then added a basket early in the third quarter to lead the team in scoring with 10 points.

The team defense pitched the rare first half shut out and led at the break 22-0.. Allen was next with 6 points while a trio of players (Harris, Madison Coleman and Makenzey McMillan) each contributed four points in the 34-13 victory.

The final score of the victory was not the story to report in as much its the joy that the Starters share with their teammates once their playing time is over on a given night. With a roster that runs 14 deep there are plenty of players ready for their turn out on the floor.

The loudest cheers you will here on any given game night come from the Cavaliers bench once the reserves have taken over. The screams and roars of support are what is right about High School sports.

Sadly, the Little Team that Can is held back by the limited number of times they get to take the floor. Both Radford and Alleghany don’t have JV squads which cost the Cavaliers four regular season games.

Mother Nature took a game off the schedule earlier when the Girls were set to play in the Championship game in a Tournament being played up at Ft. Chiswell as inclement weather caused the final day of competition to be canceled.

Tuesday night Radford comes to town for its annual visit which once again will limit the JV Girls to spectators for the evening but this time there’s wonderful news!!!! The following day the JV team will get to head down I-81 to Chilhowie High School for a Non-District contest at 6pm.

These 14 young Ladies are all dreaming about the day when they get to try and carry on the Legacy that is currently being built at CCHS. This becomes easier to chase when they get to lace up the sneakers 👟 and play games.

The team will return home on Friday night to host James River High School 🏫
