Have Game, Will Travel : Lady Cavaliers head South for Saturday tilt

One day after dispatching Radford on the road the Lady Cavaliers did a quick turnaround and are now set to compete in a day long Battle of the State festival being held at T.W. Andrews High School in High Point, North Carolina.

CCHS will be playing in Game #5 of 8 against Salisbury. Game 4 has entered overtime so the 4:00 tip will be pushed back a smidgen.

The Lady Hornets have posted an 11-2 record to date and are 4-0 in their district.

3:53 is the end time for the previous game and the warm up clock ⏰ was set for just 7 minutes. The goal is to try and stick to the schedule 📅 as much as possible. Looks like we will starting pretty close to on time.

After falling behind early (4-2) the Cavaliers stormed back to grap a 12-6 lead after the first eight minutes. Alyssa Ervin scored 10 points during the run.

2ND QUARTER :

Cavs push it to 20-9 quickly and the Hornets take a timeout.

While the crowd is somewhat small its rather vocal and is reacting to every call as well as every perceived non-call. Salisbury Head Coach Drew a technical foul on the way to the locker room. CCHS should be shooting free throws to start the quarter.

THIRD QUARTER :

1 of 2 Technical FT’s were made by Cavs.

TO – Salisbury with 2:49 remaining, Cavs 34-23

Hornets pulled within six points near the end of the 3rd quarter before Lauren Alley calmly beat the buzzer with a smooth 3-pointer from the top of the key

FOURTH QUARTER :

Cavs 44-34 as that action remains chippy on both sides. 5:07 left in the contest. Refs continue to hear it from the crowd throughout.

Timeout Cavaliers – 3:31 left, lead at 48-36

510pm – Final Score from High Point – Cavaliers 55, Hornets 40…..Game story to follow!

Unofficial scoring : Ervin led the team with 29 points.

Bus 🚌 rides home are always for fun when there is a W on board !

Friday full of Basketball 🏀 action offers two opposite ends of Varsity Cavaliers victories

The Boys Varsity squad opened a day long set of games Friday with a contest that held an entire season worth of drama and Coach vs Coach chess play and roughly six hours later the Girls Varsity team won a contest that was simply never in doubt.

Let’s start with the CCHS vs Alleghany tilt that was being played as part of a weekend long festival over at Floyd County High School 🏫. While the game was part of the Annual Chance Harman Classic it was also counting as the Mountaineers regular season visit to Carroll County.

The first quarter was typical get your feet under you and possibly adjusting to the unusual 1:30 tipoff. The contest was knotted at 8-8 and AHS carried a 29-25 lead into the break. Davis Reitzel was saddled with his second foul early in the first quarter and was limited to just 7 points in the first half. Fortunately for Head Coach Anthony Barnes his smothering team Defense was holding AHS within reach.

An electrifying three possession spurt that ended with a trio of layups for the Cavs was later followed by back to back 3-pointers from Reitzel allowed the squad to take the 3rd quarter 18-12. Now playing with a 43-41 advantage CCHS was eight minutes away from another victory.

Fast forward to an AHS timeout with 2:31 remaining in regulation and the Mountaineers clinging to a 49-47. The intensity was tuned up a few notches and a few empty possessions later there was another AHS TO, same score but with 1:03 on the clock ⏰.

Back to back forced jump balls only added to the drama and when the Cavaliers forced another late turnover Reitzel tied the score at 49 by calmly sinking a pair of free throws with 0:26.9 remaining in regulation. This led to the Cavaliers taking a 30 second TO.

AHS ran the clock down to 0:10.9 before calling its next time out to set up a final play. The Cavs called a full timeout next in hopes of defending that play. The proceeding play put the visitors in perfect position for an offensive rebound basket with 0:04.3 on the clock. Elijah Cox was whistled for a foul on the basket but the free throw was missed and the Cavs corralled the rebound and quickly called another TO, this one with 0:02.7 to play.

The clock ⏰ was adjusted back to 0:03.3 which would prove to be the perfect amount of time for Barnes and his Staff to design a play from mid court that would end with Reitzel sinking the game tying basket just before the horn.

Six timeouts were called over the final 2:31 in the fourth quarter, three by each coach as the chess match was on in full force. Fortunately the Cavs had the final TO which led to the perfect play, one fitting for the Sports center Top 10.

CCHS scored the first four points in OT with Bryce Smoot and Reitzel both accounting for a basket and Ethan Richardson drained two free throws down the stretch to give the Cavaliers a hard fought 57-54 victory.

Reitzel led the team in scoring with 23 points while Richardson (11) and Cox (10) joined the Junior in double figures.

The other side of the bookend Wins came when the Varsity Girls traveled up to Radford. This match-up was Varsity only as the Bobcats don’t have enough players to field two teams.

The Lady Cavaliers are the defending State Champions with a unique blend of talent while the Bobcats are an undersized group looking to build a foundation of sorts. A mismatch of Biblical magnitude and it should be noted that the Lady Cavaliers players and Coaches handled the contest with a noteworthy amount of grace, from start to finish.

All nine players received ample minutes of playing time in both halves and while the Halftime score was 40-2 it was as polite as it could be. The starters exited during the third quarter and remained on the bench while Madison Lyons had to set a personal high in rebounds.

Two solid wins for our Cavaliers on a day that had a little bit of everything.

Kudos to the fans that made the Loop and attended all three games as the JV Boys dropped a hard fought decision to AHS in the old Gym at Floyd County.
