Davis Reitzel poured in 14 of his team high 20 points in the second half to push CCHS past the host Pioneers 71-56 Friday afternoon in Non-District play. Elijah Cox (17) and Bryce Smoot (12) joined Reitzel in double figures as the Cavs earned their second victory in three days.
Fort Chiswell played CCHS to a draw over the opening 8 minutes at 13-13. But early in the second quarter the Cavs began to pull away, first behind Cox (9 pts in 2nd) and after the break behind Reitzel.
Nine of the 10 Cavaliers that dressed for the contest found their way into the scoring column with the highlight being an 8-0 burst midway through the final frame that put the game out of reach. The score was 57-45 when the flurry began and the lead was at 20 following the two minutes of madness.
Reitzel started the push on a breakaway when he was fouled while attempting to dunk the ball. After the two free throws were converted another turnover had Cox flying to the basket for a successful dunk. While both of those plays were pretty the capper might have stole the show.
Reitzel was leading another fastbreak when he spotted Jabin Talley alone under the basket. Instead of scoring the layup Talley floated a pass into the air that Reitzel corralled and made a picturesque off balance shot.
Another basket that pleased the Cavaliers crowd came moments later when K J Reeves converted a basket while being fouled.
Two games with Grayson County were postponed for two different reasons and the Athletic Directors will be working on rescheduling those contests.
