Early in the third quarter of Wednesday nights Non-District contest vs Galax the CCHS Cavaliers were leading 44-24 and there seemed to be little doubt in the outcome other than the margin of victory.
Galax called a timeout with 5:42 remaining in the quarter and a different team emerged from the huddle. The visitors scored the games next 13 points and the deficit was quickly down to just seven.
Carroll County would only score three baskets after that TO but the combination of clutch free throws and two stellar defensive plays allowed the Cavaliers to escape with a hard fought 60-56 victory over their County neighbors.
CCHS finished the fourth quarter shooting 11 for 15 from the free throw line, led by Elijah Cox (5-6) and Davis Reitzel (4-4). Cox finished the night with 21 points, followed by Reitzel with 15.
The key play down the stretch came at the four minute mark with the lead down to five at 49-44. Reitzel executed the perfect block on a driving layup that would have made it a three point game and the possession quickly sent Cox to the line on the other end where two made free throws pushed the lead back out to 51-44.
Reitzel later teamed up with Brayden Smoot for another block to keep the lead at five, 51-46.
CCHS will have a quick turnaround as the Cavaliers return to action tomorrow night with Grayson County coming to town.

Cavs jumped out early, leading the game 9-2 after just under three minutes, leading to an early Galax timeout. The lead is 23-14 after one quarter.

CCHS opens the second half with an 8-2 spurt and now lead by 20 (44-24). TO Galax
Galax clamped down on the defensive end and closed the quarter on a 13-0 run following the TO. Lead down to seven points after 3rd.
Tremendous atmosphere in the Gym, should be the case for the final eight minutes.

1st quarter in the books 📚!and thanks to 5 made 3-pointers the Cavaliers lead 19-9!
Hayden Jackson added a fifth 3-pointer (Cavs 6th) to extend the CCHS lead out to 30-14 at the break.
The 3rd quarter was a trade of runs as the Cavilers scored the first 10 points to push their lead out to 40-14 before Galax answered with 8 of their own.
Isaiah Easter dropped in 7 points during the frame which ended with CCHS leading 42-22.
Once again the Cavaliers had a spurt, scoring 8 straight to open the quarter and take the lead out to 50-22
Galax scored the final 10 points of the contest but the contest belonged to the home team from the opening tap. All 12 Cavaliers that dressed played and nine of them ended up scoring points.
Jackson led the scoring with 15 and was joined in double figures by Easter with adding 10.
Key to the game was how well the Cavs executed their 2-3 match up zone from start to finish. Hitting 8 3-pointers spaced the court for the offense.
