A Look behind the curtain

At the end of 2020 my Wife Linda and I moved to beautiful Laurel Fork located in the southwest part of equally beautiful Carroll County.

I immediately went in search for a way that we could give back to the residents of our new home but wasn’t sure what was going to be the answer as to just how to accomplish this.

The first thing that I pursued was trying to find a way to link up with Carroll County High School. Year one I set aside every Friday night πŸŒ™ in the fall to follow the Cavilers Varsity football team.

Two things immediately jumped out to me with the first being just how far the teams had to travel over the 10 week schedule. The second one was just how competitive the team was every step of the way. The final record was 2-8 but six of the eight losses were by the slimmest of margins.

Outside of the games with Radford and Glenvar the Cavilers found themselves in a position to win the game when the clock ⏰ read 0:00. I used the MaxPreps app to share the results in live time with anyone who knows the app exists.

I had a starting point but it only involved one of the multitude of teams that wear the colors so there was plenty of work still to do.

.

Hagen Giles is the General Manager of the Olde Mill Resort where we reside and Hagen is someone who I have a great deal of respect for so anytime we get to visit I listen closely to every word. Hagen was kind enough to listen to my vision and he was aware of my efforts with MaxPreps and the football team.

Hagen mentioned to me that how much the Parents and Grandparents could benefit from having the results and other information from the games because not everyone has the ability to travel around the region to keep up with everything.

Today is a great example in that the Junior Varsity match for the Volleyball 🏐 team gets underway in Radford at 5:30pm. A person would need to leave before 4pm to watch the match and support the team.

Someone would need to be off from work already, have a few gallons of gasoline β›½ in the tank and then there’s the $7 cost for a ticket.

Now I have an idea πŸ’‘that I think could be a wonderful, wonderful tool πŸ”§ for everyone in the County community that has an interest in CCHS sports.

A number of issues immediately jump out such as trying to get the project started from ground zero. The goal is to have a site that has results from any / all Cavilers sports contest and the site would be free and available for all to enjoy. Coaches would have the opportunity to submit stats that can be shared in a manner that simply doesn’t currently exist at this point.

Then there is the effort of trying to convince skeptics that will wonder what I am going to get around to sell people. My efforts are part of a Bigger Picture that falls under a Non-profit organization but we can get deeper into that later as its getting closer to begin the trek up to Radford.
