UNLV was on the road so it was a Utah 2-Step on Martin Luther King Day

The Big Sky conference will be playing Covid catch-up for a spell due to a large number of cancelations so both the Dixie State Ladies and the Southern Utah University Men played make up games on Monday.

Utah Valley squeaked out a 68-65 road victory when the Trail Blazers came up short on a 3 point shot attempt that would have forced overtime.

Up the road in Cedar City visiting Portland State went shot for shot with the homesteading Thunderbirds until the final few minutes. SUU led 70-69 before they finally put away the pesky Vikings by 10 points.

Both contests proved to be highly entertaining from start to finish 👏 and nothing but the best for all four schools going forward.

Before all of the other Home Town Teams there was Fresno State !

CWO4 Charles T Carter was stationed in many places during his nearly 30 year Military career but the one that became my birth place was a small base in Lemoore, California. When you try to explain to folks where Lemoore is located you say ” find Fresno and look just South “.

Fresno State is my original hometown College and pulling for the Bulldogs has always been easy enough. Tonight the Men’s basketball 🏀 team crosses the mountain pass to square off with MWC rival UNLV.

This creates what I like to call a Win-Win contest. If the home team wins its good and if the visiting Bulldogs prove superior even better.

. Booogz and I will start the Holiday weekend inside the Thomas and Mack Center watching two of the three NCAA teams that were coached by Jerry Tarkanian.

Hoping everyone has a Blessed Weekend !

Equal Opportunity Sports Fans : Ladies Night 🌙 in the Desert 🏜 Oasis

Lin and I have always tried to make it a point to support our Home teams so it makes sense that when we are on the road that we would search out Student Athletes to cheer on!

Depending on the city and the location of the closest College or University there’s no telling what level of talent we will find but we will show up and cheer for both teams. We also try to make sure we have a balance between the Men and the Ladies.

Tonight its Mountain West Conference Basketball 🏀 between the Lady Rebels of UNLV and the visitors from Boise State. The Lady Broncos will be the underdogs but I’m sure they will give it their best shot here inside the Cox Pavillion.

If the floor looks familiar its because the NBA Summer League teams play games here and next door at the Thomas and Mack Center.

7:44 – PST Halftime score UNLV 35-17

40 points scored in the third quarter !

57-35 Vegas after 3 – Booker now has 26

You can argue the Men’s Hoops Blue Bloods but there’s only one Black Sheep 🐑 – UNLV

It’s been just over two decades since the Running Rebels captured their Natty by simply whooping the Duke Blue Devils in the Championship game but the bigger story took place one year later. UNLV simply ran the table all the way to the Final Four with what the talking heads were calling the Greatest College team EVER!. All that stood in the way of Perfection was a rematch versus Duke and a title game against Kansas. Duke wasn’t the brand back then that they are now and Coach K had yet to capture his first Natty.

Christian Latener, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill teamed up to pull off one of greatest upsets in basketball 🏀 history and then two nights later cut ✂️ down the nets after dispatching Roy Williams and Kansas.

The talented trio would return the following season and capture their own back to back titles by taking down Michigan’s Fab Five.

Two titles against two of the most famous teams in College Hoops history.. Sadly for Jerry Tarkanian his NBA ready starting five moved on and the Rebels have never made it back to the point where they sat in 1999 and 2000.

The NCAA never backed off their efforts to punish Tark for his dealings inthe Desert 🏜 and at Fresno State plus Long Beach State

No Hoops in Cedar City again today.

For the second time in 3 Days the SUU Men’s Basketball 🏀 team was set to take to their home court but Covid has stopped their opponent in their tracks.

Today we found out about the 5pm postponmen from a posting on Twitter at 9am.

Sadly, the front half of our Hoops Doubleheader was also called off as the Dixie State women were set to play in their gym shortly after noon. Covid also changed those plans, pushing that game back to Monday January 17th.

All was not lost though as I did watch UNC and Virginia play while on the treadmill at the gym.

Not as fun as being inside a couple of smaller gyms in the Mountains of Utah.
